Optimize size vs number of datafiles

Can someone point me to a Microsoft reference discussing the tradeoff between datafile size and number of datafiles.  We are loading data into a research database that will probably be 300-400 GB in size.  Should this be one datafile which is allowed to grow to 400BG, or 20 datafiles of 20gb size, or something in between.  On what basis are these decisions made?Start Free Trial
