The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

ASP Web page returns 500 error when loading, has to do with SQL Database not connecting, I believe

Tags: Microsoft, SQL Server 2005 Express, Ent. Server 2008, IIS 7.0, MSPress Interactive Leaning, 2005 Express, Server 2008, IIS 7.0, Office XP Step by Step Interactive Application SQL database issue
I'm attempting to run an application from Microsoft Press, "Office XP Step by Step Interactive", on a IIS 7.0 web server with SQL Server 2005 Express.  Everything appears to have been installed and the database schema was created successfully.  I can attach to the database via SQL Server Management Studio Express and view the database's, "MsPressV01", tables.  I did have to make a few changes to make the install work correctly:
    1.  Added a password to the SQL account 'sa'.
    2.  Disable the TCP dynamic Ports for all IP's
    3.  Added 1433 to the TCP Port for all IP's

In IIS I had to modify the ASP behavior to Enable Parent Paths by setting it to True.

There are two different web pages that are accessed, one for administration, 'http://server/MIT/admin/default.asp' and the other for access to the training, 'http://server/MIT/default.asp'.

When I startup the administration page '.../MIT/admin/default.asp' I get the initial screen display and I can select from the four differnent tabs, but no information is displayed.  In reviewing the log files in IIS I see the following errors listed in them.  Listed below is a partial list of the log file from IIS that I felt might help out.  I label which log file was from what web page.

When I tried to browse to the file for the user '.../MIT/main/default.asp', I get the error 500.  Listed at the very bottom of this email is the log file from IIS that has the specifics of the error.

Since the training was created by Microsoft I'm simply trying to follow their directions on the install and how it should work.  Now they do support Access databases, but I wanted to try to use SQL as I at least understand it a bit better.  I didn't know what drivers I would need to install so that I could read the *.mdb.

Any idea on if I can make this work?  I'm a compentent, but very green when it comes to all of these working together, so please be nice.  I have tried accessing this from the IE on the server running everything locally and a computer attached to the lan.  I am running AD DC on the server and I believe I have all the access rights set correctly, as they were not initially.

Thanks so very much for any help and suggestions.

Sincerely,

Brian

When I browse to your admin page, I get a sort of "site comming soon" page from your host. Most of the IIS logs are DSN errors which is Domain Name Server which usually means that the domain or the files in the domain can't be found.

Can you upload a static HTML page and browse to it to confirm that the files are being stored and served where you are expecting them?

slamhound,

The URL are not public accessable.  When I typed the question, it converted it to a hot link.  This is all located in a intranet with no outside access.

Thanks,
Brian

Are you saying that the sample was set out for MS Access, and you are trying to set it up for SQL instead.

You need to go and find your connection strings, and change your MS Access one

(which will look something like this http://www.connectionstrings.com/?carrier=access2007)

To a SQL Server connection string:

(which will look something like this: http://www.connectionstrings.com/?carrier=sqlserver2005)

Then you'll need to change any SQL within the web pages to use SQL 2005 T-SQL dialect instead of MS Access JET SQL dialect.

It'll also help to turn on advanced error messages (or whatever its called) so you can see the error message directly in the web page.

nmcdermaid,

Thanks for the assistance...

The application 'interactive training' comes delivered to support Access or SQL in a network server environment.  I installed the software so that it was configured to access a SQL database.  Once I set the various parameters correctly in SQL Express, the software, 'interactive training' built the database schema just fine, all automatically.

I believe the application is having an issue using the SQL Express Server as it requires the SQLExpress in the connect statements.  I'm just guessing here as I haven't been to eager to dive into the code of the web pages.

I guess that will be my next step, unless someone can tell me how to change SQL Server Express to operate more the SQL Server 2005.

Thanks,
Brian

What exactly built the schema for you? Did your ASP application build the schema or did you you run a script (totally external to the app) to build the schema?

I can see:

   'General_error:_Invalid_file_dsn'

popping up a lot in your error messages.

This is curious as file dsn's are about the oldest and most unreliable way to connect to a database.

You'll need to work out what method your app is using to connect to your SQL Server instance. Normally you can open an ASP.Net app up in visual studio and there will be a connection string sitting somewhere just in one spot.

When you connect in management studio do you connect to something like this:

  localhost

or something like this:

  localhost\sqlexpress

nmcdermaid,

Thanks for the ideas, I'll check into them first thing on Monday.

As far as the schema and what built it.  The installation program for the training application is what built the database schema.  It appears as though it was an external script as it opened up a cmd window and ran some scripts.

I have looked in the ASP app, but I have  not seen the strings that you refer to.  I'll look again.

Thanks,
Brian

OK, well that at least has ascertained that the ASP app has not managed to connect at all yet.

Why don't you a search in your code on

   .DSN

A file DSN (which the error is referring to) has an extension of .DSN So if the code is trying to fins it, it'll be (incorrectly) hard coded somewhere.

I'm been delayed in getting to this.  Hopefully I'll get a chance in the next few days.  I'll report back what I find.
