How do I validate that a string field contains a valid date within the conditional split transformation editor

I have loaded data from a flat file into SQLServer 2005 tables. I have set the data type for all the fields to be varchar. The task was to load ALL the data into SQLServer tables. I now need to clean it which means I need to ensure the string values that will be loaded do indeed contain the correct information for the data type it will ultimately transform to.

For example I have loaded a string field that contains date data formatted as yyyymmdd, e.g 20070809 (valid) or 20080230 (invalid) so I need to be able to identify good andbad dates. I want the records with the valid dates to go down the happy path and the records with the bad dates go on for further investigation and written to an error table.

ISDATE appears not to be available with in the conditional split transformation editor. How else can I ensure that this field contains valid dates?
