Stored procedure to return total rows and allow rowcount to be set

I have a stored procedure that does a search on a customer table. I display the result set in a Gridview on an ASP.net page. If no where clause is set the query could return 50k+ records. The current way the page works is the sql is all inline and is requested from sql server twice. Once for the total rows, and then the query is tailored to only return the upper and lower bound records required for paging. My question is, can I create a query that will only run my select once and internally get a total record count and set the upper and lower bound rowcount for a result set for my page?
