The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. Sudden change in query JOIN performance - much slower now.

We have been running our company's accounting and project management app (Deltek Vision 4.1) on a robust database server (dual quad core Xeon, 64 bit W2K3SP2, 8 GB RAM, 6x15K RPM drives in RAID 10) for the past year or so and generally have experienced really good performance.  Just in the last week, certain reports have started running much slower than previously (as in 20 minutes as opposed to 2).

In breaking down the performance of the underlying queries, it comes down to the performance of certain JOINs.  For example:

SELECT WBS1, WBS2, DirectLabor FROM LFTemp3
returns 891 rows in 00:00:00 (instantaneously)

SELECT WBS1, WBS2, NetRevenue FROM RevTemp0
returns 16,844 rows in 00:00:21 (21 seconds; RevTemp0 draws from a udf that contains a lot of calcs)

SELECT l.WBS1, l.WBS2, r.NetRevenue, l.DirectLabor
FROM LFTemp3 l INNER JOIN RevTemp0 r
ON l.WBS1 = r.WBS1 AND l.WBS2 = r.WBS2
returns 891 rows in 00:21:43 (yes, that's 21 MINUTES!)

This makes no sense to me.  In the past, this query would have taken about the same amount of time the RevTemp0 query takes, about 20 seconds.  Now, it takes 60 times as long.  I tried a server reboot after-hours (first thing to try from my days as a hardware tech) but no change.  The CPU peaks out at 11% during the query - not really stretched.

This is just one example, other things are "slow" but I think if I can figure out what's going on here I can solve the broader problem.
