SQL Server Management Sudio opening dialog hidden, can't retrieve, can't use studio, have to kill in task mgr.

When I invoke SQL Server Management Studio, the opening splash screen comes up on Screen 1. Then the Stuido comes up on Screen 2 but I no longer get the dialog box that prompts for the particular server to connect to. The title bar is dimmed. Nothing responds. I can only kill it using thge task manager. The task manager says there is an open dialaog box but I don't see it anywhere.
