The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Identify the matching record for the result of an aggregate function

I have to join two tables and want to return the Minimum value of one of the matching records for a given field.  I need to then take the row that contains the minimum value in that field and display it (after joining it to another table).

For example I have three tables:

1)      Customers (CID, Name)
2)      Purchases (PID, CID, ProductID, DateCreated)
3)      Products (ProductID, Name)

I want to identify for each customer, the first time that they purchased a product (e.g. MIN(Purchases.DateCreated).  Then, based on this matching row, I want to determine the product name for that purchase.

The query I have is:

SELECT  Customers.CID, MIN(Purchases.DateCreated)
FROM   Customers
JOIN      Purchases
ON         Customers.CID = Purchases.CID
GROUP BY Customers.CID

What I do not know how to do is how to identify the Purchases.PID that matches the row that matches the MIN(Purchases.DateCreated) aggregate function.

For example, given the following dataset:

Customers
111   Joe Smith
222   John Sally
333   Steve Jones

Purchases
444   111   99   5/5/2008
555   111   97   5/3/2008
777   222   99   5/1/2008
888   333   98   4/27/2008

Products
97   Baseball
98   Basketball
99   Soccerball

The result would be
111   5/3/2008  Baseball
222   5/1/2008  Soccerball
333  4/27/2008  Basetball

Input is greatly appreciated.
