The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Clean up database files

Asked by Bojik in SQL Server 2005, Databases Miscellaneous

Tags: , ,

I have a lot of database files on my SQL server hard drive that I need to delete as the SQL database has either been removed or put out of service.  As this was not done when the database was removed I now have to go through each file and verify what file is in use and what file is not.
System info - single SQL server for a nine server farm with reporting service running on two other servers
I have checked all other programs within the farm and verified what database they are using and that it is listed within the SQL manager.
Not being a SQL guru I need a little help with what files I can and cannot remove.
Assumption - Each SQL database has a '.mdf' and a '.LDF' file, so if I go through my list of database names in SQL manager any file names that are not listed there I should be able to delete the '.mdf' and '.LDF' files (yes/no).  '.bak' files are backup files that can be deleted and a new backup file can be created from existing SQL databases from within SQL manager.
Main question - There are a few files that I do not recgonize as a file name that were once a database or are not a '.mdf' or a '.LDF' file.  List of file names;
mssqlsystemresource (mdf/ldf) (sure looks like a system database but is not listed in the 'System Databases' in SQL manager)
modellog$4IDR (no extension)
model$4IDR (no extension)
master$4IDR (no extension)
masterlog$4IDR (no extension)
distmdl (mdf/ldf)
Secondary question - Can a database file exist on a remote harddrive (not a physical drive of the SQL server)?Start Free Trial
