Need to enable tcp/ip for SQL Server 2005 Express

I am trying to connect to a SQL Server 2005 Express instance but I get an error message which indicates that the server doesn't support requested protocol. The network protocol setting is set to tcp/ip.
I can connect using "shared memory" only.
