sql expess 2005 connection error

running sql express 2005 on windows server 2003, i ran microsoft updates yesterday and the 1 client that connects to this sql cant connect now. been on the server and looked at the odbc link and i get this message

Microsoft SQL Server ODBC Driver Version 03.86.3959
Running connectivity tests...
Attempting connection
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]Specified SQL server not found.
TESTS FAILED!

this was working fine before the updates, any ideas??
