The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

(1 of 2) SQL Server Express 2005 embedded install and Network Visibility

Asked by WernerVonBraun in SQL Server 2005, MS SQL Server, Developer Tools

Tags: SQL express 2005 embedded

I'm writing an installer for our product that contains the option to install a new SQL Express instance (SQL Server Express 2005 SP3)

After extracting all the installation files, I invoke setup.exe - I ask user to provide domain, NT username and password and I pass those on as command line parameters:

/qn ADDLOCAL=ALL SQLBROWSERACCOUNT=[theentereddomainname]\[theenteredusername] SQLBROWSERPASSWORD=[you guessed it] INSTANCENAME=[our product's name] SQLBROWSERAUTOSTART=1

So far so good, it installs quite well, but I realised soon enough that I had a few problems. The new instance was working perfectly fine on the machine I created it on, but from other machines on the network it was not visible. I had to do some tweaking in SQL Server Configuration Manager (enabling TCPIP) and SQL Server Surface Area Configuration (allowing for both local and remote connections).

1) We will later create further SQL users, and allow the users to use them. I would imagine that for that I would need to add SECURITYMODE=SQL - do I also need to add SAPWD? Does the SAPWD value need to be in quotes or can I leave out the quotes provided I give it a password without spaces and other funny characters?

2) I am guessing that I will also need to set the DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS parameter, but I'm not clear on whether I should set it to 0, 1, 2 or some other value?

3) Do I need to set the SQLAUTOSTART parameter or is it defaulted to start automatically (which I what I want)?

So, first of all, could you scan over the above and confirm or deny that I've understood what I need to do correctly, but also, can you tell me if I have forgotten anything here. In the second question (2 of 2, to be posted shortly) I will ask a specific question of a problem I am experiencing right now after all the tweaking ...

Thank you so far.
