I went through each document - SQL Server Miigration for Access still can't find my server. Any other suggestions? I'm at a loss
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI need to export an Access databse to SQL Server Express. I've installed the SQL Server on my local machine and downloaded SQL Server Miigration for Access. When I try to define the server. I get the following error:
Connection to SQL Server failed.
A network related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to the SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and the SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (Provider: Named Pipes Provider, error 40 - could not open a connection to SQL Server).
I have tried setting the server name as :
SQLEXPRESS
LOCALHOST
HOST
127.0.0.1
LOCALHOST/SQLEXPRESS
HOST/SQLEXPRESS
On the SQL Server Configuration I have the following settings:
SQL Server 2005 Services
- SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) - enabled
- SQL Server Browser - enabled
SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration
- Protocols for SQLEXPRESS
- - Shared Memory - enabled
- - Named Pipes - enabled
- - PCP/IP - enabled
- - VIA - disabled
SQL Native Client Configuration
- Client Protocols
- - Shared Memory 1 Enabled
-- PCP/IP 2 Enabled
-- Named Pipes 3 Enabled
I've got SQL Server Express 9 installed and the Migration Assistant is for SQL Server 5. Could this be the problem? I downloaded each yesterday.
Any ideas on what I'm missing would greatly be appreciated.

1. on the server, you need to open the SQL Server Configuration Manager and click on the Client Protocals, then enable TCP/IP or what you want, then try again
2. on the server, you need to open the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio and right click on the server node, select Properties, Connections, check the Allow remote Connections to this Server
Hope this helps.
