Using function in the update statement

I have the follwing UPDATE Statement

Update AwardApplication
Set NominationNo = GenerateNomination(ApplicationID) --calling a function
Where AwardStatus = 30

ApplicationID is the Primary Key in the above table.
Function is used to generate a Nomination number with some prefixes based on the Application type and ApplicationID.

But it is not updating each record row by row, instead it is updating the same value for all  records.


Should I use cursor to access each record and update?

UPDATE T1
SET T1.NominationNo = GenerateNomination(T2.ApplicationID)

INNER JOIN AwardApplication T2
ON T1.ApplicationID = T2.ApplicationID

please show the function code.

First make sure whether the function query is returning right result. Test it by manually executing the function's query by various ApplicationID values.
Possibly it may be returning more than one record and first value may get updated in all rows.

Another way is to avoid function & use INNER JOIN.

Query may look like

Update AwardApplication
Set NominationNo = Nomination.ApplicationID
FROM AwardApplication
INNER JOIN Nomination ON AwardApplication.ApplicationID = Nomination.ApplicationID
Where AwardStatus = 30

I just assumed other table as 'Nomination' and foreign key as ApplicationID. Modify if needed according to your scenario.

No need to use CURSOR, which is not advicable.

Where AwardStatus = 30

your function work properly or not. if not then show the function code.
