I have a query that involves 3 system tables:
sys.indexes, sys.objects, sys.partitions

Is it possible to get the index size from these tables?

You need to involve this DMV sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats to calculate Index size as given below

@anushahanna: Remember that sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats with NULL value as an object id (the second parameter) can kill the performance (do not run in peek hours on the production servers). Also, you have to put the values directly as integers into sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats parameters when database runs in compatibility mode 80.

The following query brings 0 rows back for me. It is in SS 2005.

SELECT * FROM  sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats (DB_ID(), NULL, NULL , NULL, 'LIMITED')
WHERE avg_record_size_in_bytes IS NOT NULL

There are 100s of inedx records in the index_physical_stats system table, but all the avg_record_size_in_bytes and record_count values are NULL.

Try this one:

SELECT * FROM  sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats (DB_ID(), NULL, NULL , NULL, 'DETAILED')
WHERE avg_record_size_in_bytes IS NOT NULL

For Mode as 'LIMITED' both avg_record_size_in_bytes and record_count values would be NULL.

As brejk said, if I use the DETAILED option, it crushes performance.

@anushahanna: I would try to use sys.indexes with sys.partitions (queried with NOLOCK hint) to calculate the size of indexes (just to find out if the performance wouldn't be better). The sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats is useful especially for looking at index fragmentation stats.

brejk, will you use the INDEXPROPERTY to get the index size? If so, which column would you use it on.

@anushahanna: There is no such indexproperty like size. You have to join sys.indexes, sys.partitions and sys.allocation_units views to calculate the size of your indexes.

For SQL Server 2008 it's available here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=531c53e7-8a2a-4375-8f2f-5d799aa67b5c&displaylang=en. Master the metadata and there will be no task you couldn't perform without graphical interface :-)
