Browse All TopicsIn SQL Server 2005 I have a table which is used to hold frequencies, I use these values in my project to establish an end date from a user enterd start date. My problem occurs when I try to use the fields as part of the DATEADD function in a query, for example:
CREATE TABLE FREQUENCY (FREQUENCY_Code int PRIMARY KEY,
FREQUENCY_Desc varchar(50),
FREQUENCY_DatePart varchar(5),
FREQUENCY_Number int)
INSERT INTO FREQUENCY VALUES (1, 'Half Year', 'm', 6)
INSERT INTO FREQUENCY VALUES (2, 'Three Weeks', 'ww', 3)
INSERT INTO FREQUENCY VALUES (3, 'Quarterly', 'm', 3)
SELECT DATEADD(FREQUENCY_DatePart
FROM FREQUENCY
The above SELECT statement returns the following error:
"'FREQUENCY_DatePart' is not a recognized dateadd option."

indeed, you cannot use a column/variable for the first argument.
you will need a case statement, for example, for that.
