SQL 2005 rror on startup

I get the following on a new clients XP Pro machine running SQL Server 2005:

"your sql server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (unknown package id)"

Not sure of the history, but they would like to get this running again asap (as would I).

Any thoughts please.

Thanks for those sugestions - knowing very little about SQL - will uninstalling preserve the databases and will re-installing SQL make them work again?

uninstalling will preserve your database files... you should attach the fatabase files to the newly installed server

How would I go about attaching the database and is there anything to be aware of when re-installing such as passwords for the sa account?

you can attach the database files from the managment Studio or by using the sp_attachd procedure..
Since you are installing a new copy no need to know sa password...

It seems thst SQL 2005 is not needed and may have been left over, so I am just going to uninstall it.  Thanks for all your help.

Going to distribute the points as all suggestions made were to remove / reinstall.

I would just uninstall it and re-install if required.
