Installing SQL Server 2008 64-bit on Windows Server 2008 64-bit

Asked by: DaMule

I am trying to upgrade a SQL Server 2005 Standard x64 instance running on Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x64 running on VMware ESX 3.5 Update 2. At first I thought it was a bad ISO and so redownloaded the media to no effect. The installer returns all green check marks with no warnings. It proceeds into the install but when it get to Install_SqlSqmShared_Cpu64_Action it get the following message about 20 times:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setup

The following error has occurred:

The only way I can kill the install is by ending the task. It creates a Dr Watson folder every time the error appears. Below is the detail text of the Install_SqlSqmShared_Cpu64 log:

So, when you say "upgrade" from 2005....  you really mean that you're doing a side-by-side install of SQL 2008?

Have you already uninstalled the 2005 version?

by: DaMulePosted on 2008-09-19 at 08:55:32ID: 22522553

In a sense yes - that is the case. I have 3 64-bit instances and 1 32-bit instanse. I am trying to upgrade one of the 64-bit 2005 instances. No - I have not because the databases need upgraded as well.

There's nothing in the log file that's of any use.... it's as if the install was somehow magically aborted.

I presume you've tried this several times, with the same results?

From http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3863503&SiteID=17

"Encountered issue with ms updates not being initialised via GP.  Went into updates and clicked configure settings and selected OK.  Clicked on install updates and waited for the update status to go Green.  Install of sql2k8 then worked with no errors.  May be different issue but thought it might help."

This server was managed by WSUS as well. After manually running the updates from Microsoft Update I was able to install and upgrade successfully.
