Question

SQL Server 2008 Installation Error - Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 Installation has failed.

Asked by: cmaple

I am having problems installing Microsoft SQL Server 2008 x64 Std, on a clean installation of Windows Server 2008 64 Bit Service Pack 1.  With .NET Framework 3.5sp1, and all updates run on it.  The error I recieve states: SQL Server 2008 Setup requires .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed.

Things I have tried so far:
Uninstalling .NET Framework 3.5 sp1, and then running the setup. = Same Error
Next I ran the .NET Framework 3.5 installation, and tried SQL setup again = Same Error
Next I ran .NET Framework 3.5 sp1 installation again with .NET 3.5 already installed = Same Error.
I saw a report that Updating the Windows Installer to version 4.5 may help so I tried this and then repeated my previous steps = Same Error
This is on a Virtual machine, so I have tried the installation directly from the ISO mounted as a CD Rom, and I have also tried placing the DVD in the DVD drive on the host machine and mounting it directly. Both ways = Same Error

The only other software installed on this VM are Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5.0i fully updated, and VMware Tools.

This is a development VM running on VMware Server 2.0.0 on a Server 2008 x64 host system. (I am not sure if this is important or not.)

Any help would be appreciated.  I have found similar problems, and solutions, but not the same problem described anywhere.

may this helps: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx
At the requirements table you can find that it supports server virtualization on Hyper-V..... no VMWare mentioned.
Do you have an option to run it on a Hyper-V virtualized machine  ? Or a "real" physical box ?

That is a good idea im-consult, I will build a Hyper-v machine tomorrow and try see if that makes any difference.  (I Prefer VMware because of the simplicity of networking, and teamed NIC support.)  I will update this post with the results once I have them.

I also forgot to mention that I am installing this while logged into the system as the local administrator, and this has not yet been joined to a domain.

cmaple,
sounds like a good idea. And good that you also mentioned beeing logged on as the local admin, which is indeed not a good idea in a domain environment but it should not a show stopper. Nevertheless, handling Hyper-V is quite easy and if you haven't done it already you#ll be surprised about the speed !

Today, I built an Identical test VM on Hyper-V (except it had Hyper-V Integration Services installed instead of VMWare Tools.)  I receive the same problems on this system.  So I guess that rules out the VMware vs Hyper-V aspect of this problem.

Thanks for the idea though im-consult, please post it if you think of anything else I should try.

When I execute the command aspnet_regiis.exe -i  I receive the following error.

The error indicates that IIS is not installed on the machine.  Please install IIS before using this tool.
Finished installing ASP.NET (2.0.50727).

Then I receive the same error as before when I run Setup from the SQL installation disk.

cmaple,
have you ever installed IIS on your server ?
This needs to be installed or better, this role needs to enabled as a requirement for SQL Server.

IIS was not listed as a prerequisite, so I had not installed it previously.

I have now installed the Web Server(IIS) Role, and I still receive the same error.

by: cmaplePosted on 2009-03-13 at 13:39:24ID: 23883308

I also tried running this on a "Real" server today.  (not a Virtual Server)  I received the same error there.

Maybe I have a bad ISO or something.

cmaple,
indeed, this is realy strange. Well, wouldn't be a bad idea to find / download another iso and try it again.
Before doing this one question:
If you start setup with the IS, do you see the start screen where you can choose all the options ? If so, please read the prerequisites text carefully, may there is another item that is missing. But, from my knowledge it is only IIS that need to be enabled. Just for a try, can you please re-check the IIS role and the enabled features ? Just to make sure nothing is missing, please enable ALL features for this role. I know, sounds stupid, but even this installation problem is strange...

Im-Consult.  I am sorry for the delay in getting back to you.  Since I last posted, I have downloaded a new copy of the ISO.  The result is the same though.

I had previously installed IIS with the default role services, so I went back into IIS and added all available role services.  (I don't think I would do this on a production box, but I don't want to take a chance of missing something.) It also look like it installed the Windows Process Activation Service including the .NET Environment feature.

I then Restarted the system to allow all automatic services to start normally.

Now the SQL server install proceeds normally.  I was not sure if it was part of IIS that it was waiting on, or the .NET Environment sub-feature.  So I removed the IIS role from the server and rebooted.

The SQL install still worked.  So the final solution was to install the following features shown in the attached JPG

I have experienced the exact same issue with a VMWare Virtual Machine with Windows Svr 2008 R2. I had everything already installed besides the XPS Viewer. After installing XPS Viewer and rebooting the machine I was then able to proceed with the installation.

Thanks for posting this info.

I have the same setup VMware Virtual Machine wiht Svr 08 Ent R2 x64 and SQL Svr 08 ENT x64. This solution did not work for me. I installed all the suggested componenets and am getting the exact same error.

I was getting this error over and over, I went through the forums, I installed all the features and pre-reqs.  Then just for yuks I went ahead and download / re-burned the cd.  WHAM installation went off without a hitch!  Three days wasted on a bad burn.  First burn with Nero second with Gear ISO.  So if you have tried it all with no joy, do the download and burn over again thingie but use different burn software.

Hope this helps
