Thanks mcmonap
This did lead me to look further and I am now working OK.
The simple answer was - the server was not being started automatically on startup. once I did this - problem gone.
Thanks for the help

Browse All TopicsHi
I had installed SQL 2008 previously on my vista ultimate machine but had not used it for a while. When I tried to use the managemen console recently it was telling me that it could not find the instance of the server although this was visible when browsing. In a typical both feet first fashion I ran repair from the install disk and everything continued with no problem untl on completion I got the error message:
Setup has detected a non canonical discretionary access control list (DACL) on directory 'c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS10.SQL2008'. Please verify your security settings and make corrections if needed.
I haven't a clue where to start looking so any help would be greatly appreciated.

HI kevinduk,
I would recomend the first place to look is at the security permissions on that directory - you can do this in windows via the properties tab. Compare this with other folders at the same level and look for differences - I don't have a 2008 deployment to hand to give you my permissions lists but this is a good place to start.
