Hi, for most of the errors, we have workarounds like modifying the registry etc. So, depending on the error message, we can look at various options of fixing the errors. Rolling back the service pack is the last option.

Kindly post the exact error message to fix it better and faster

Can I still use SQL2008 without SP1? What am I going to miss?

by: geek_vjPosted on 2009-10-31 at 06:27:15ID: 25709677

From the event vwr image, it looks like your windows time is incorrect. Please try resetting your system time to the current time to get the exact error messages in event viewer.

>>Can I still use SQL2008 without SP1? What am I going to miss?

SP1 resolved some bugs which exist in SQL Server 2008 version and you can view the release notes of SQL Server 2008 SP1 to know the exact issues which were resolved in SP1.

If you are planning to install SQL 2008 initially, then at a later point of time if you find any issues/bugs, you can install SP1.

Coming to your initial question-
>>If SQLServer 2008 SP1 install failed, what can I do about it?

Before installation, you need to make sure to take backups of all databases and take a system state backup to get the system intact in case of any issues.

Also, depending on the errors, we have many proven solutions to correct the same.

Hope this helps!

>> I  am afraid my event viewer got messed up, Please see attached file and advise.

It didn't list any error message and contains only informational messages.
Kindly post the error message which you obtained while you did the SP1 installation so that it contain some more information to help you fix it out.

geek_vj was correct..
Your earlier installation had some issues and it would be present in the summary.txt

I plan to use a new dev box, install VS208 and SQL2008, then go online let windows update update sp. Would that be a good solution?

by: rrjegan17Posted on 2009-11-06 at 18:49:14ID: 25764766

If you are planning to go for a new box, then it should go fine without any issues.
Kindly make sure your Summary.txt for the initial installation of SQL Server 2008 doesn't have any issues to install SP1 successfully.
