SQL Server 2008 totally hangs up

We just installed SQL Server 2008 on a VMWare environment, dual processors, 2GB RAM.  Used all default setup, didn't change any configuration in the installation.

But when ever a query is running, the database hangs up, no other queries, other event or any other application get response until the running query is done. Even try to refresh "Tables" from left tree in Management studio then it shows error  "Lock request timeout period expired error 1222" after some  time.

We are new to SQL Server, used Oracle before.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
