SQL Server Express 2008 Management Studio Error: Connection successful but login error

Hi,

I have a Windows 7 machine with a new, fully patched and complete copy of SQL Server Express 2008 installed.  I open SQL Server Management Studio and ask it to connect to MACHINENAME\SQLEXPRESS and it appears to do it.  I right-click on Database and select "new database".  At that point, I get the following error:

Failed to connect to server MACHINENAME\SQLEXPRESS (Microsoft.SqlServer.Connectioninfo)

A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occured during the login process (Provider: Named Pipes Provider, Error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233)

The server was installed using mixed mode and I have tried to login both ways with the same results.  I tried to use the configuration manager to change preferred client protocols with the same result.

An answer to this problem would be deeply appreciated.

Look in services (run services.msc) and make sure the SQL server service you installed is actually started.

Also you may need to run the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool which should be in your program group and allow access for names pipes and local access.

Yes -- I forgot to mention -- The SQL Server service is indeed running.

With regard to SQL Server Surface configuration tool, Microsoft discontinued that tool in SQL Server 2008.  Instead, there is the configuration manager.  I managed to get it to work by enabling VIA protocol.
