It depents on what you want to do with it, if it's for testing of playing I would suggest to choose for SYSTEM.

It's my development machine. but I'd run a local database only.

>> It's my development machine. but I'd run a local database only.

If its a development machine and you need only local Access ( No access to network) then you can use either Local System or even your account itself.

If you need to have Network access, then set some domain user account for startup.

by: B-BytePosted on 2009-11-07 at 18:47:51ID: 25769221

Does that machine hangs in a Domain? if not, I still would use SYSTEM. If it is hanging in a domain you can use your network username and pass, so in that case NETWORK.

OK, next question is whether I should leave the default "Disabled" for the Startup Type for SQL Server Browser?

by: rrjegan17Posted on 2009-11-07 at 19:14:07ID: 25769288

If you would be having multiple instances in your server or you would be listening on some other port other than the default 1433, then have it running.
Else you can have that disabled..

OK, SQL Express is installed. Now I have questions about installing Management Studio.

It presents me with the same installation GUI I just used for SQL Express and I am confused.

What option do I select to install just the Management Studio?

by: rrjegan17Posted on 2009-11-08 at 04:36:50ID: 25770286

Try selecting the first option and choose add features to an existing installation and select client components installation..
If that confufes you, then ignore that window and you can do it via the direct installation here.

by: newbiewebPosted on 2009-11-08 at 04:55:07ID: 25770322

OK. I proceeded with th first option because it said "...or add features to an existing installation". Isn't that what Management Studio is, a feature?

I ran into the same bizarre installation dialog as earlier. The attached screen shows that the installation requires me to install options, as if it thinks I am extending the SQL Server installation on that machine. I am adding a feature only.

Where am I going wrong?

by: rrjegan17Posted on 2009-11-08 at 05:01:43ID: 25770337

Ok..Since I don't have access to Server now, Not able to try it out and hence provided you the second option which should install SSMS for you..

by: newbiewebPosted on 2009-11-08 at 05:19:01ID: 25770376

The second option does nothing more than what I have been doing, opening the SQL Server installation program. And when I do, I do not see an option to install Client Components. I get a singled button to click :Install" or "Next" for example. I always end up with this stupid dialog which tells me I have nothing checked for instalation, but there is nothing to select.

This is not good...

by: rrjegan17Posted on 2009-11-08 at 05:27:04ID: 25770396

Ok.. Steps to install SSMSE as per my second option here:

http://www.asql.biz/Articoli/SQLX08/Art3_1.aspx

This would guide you through step by step snapshots to help you out..

If that is not helping, then something's messed up and request you to do the following:

1. Uninstall SQL Server Express which you just get it installed.
2. Proceed a new installation as per:

http://www.asql.biz/Articoli/SQLX08/Art1_2.aspx

And download SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services instead of SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools provided in the step by step procedure.

I tried to uninstall SQL Express, since the first article showed an additional feature for SQLMS that mine did not show.

But now it won't unistall!

I get "Please wait while the current program is finished uninstaling or being changed".

What now?

by: newbiewebPosted on 2009-11-08 at 07:11:14ID: 25770689

Scratch that. There was a dialog in the background. I am now uninstaling.

Got it installed! Next I'll be posting a problem with login permissions.

Thanks,
