Try selecting the first option and choose add features to an existing installation and select client components installation..
If that confufes you, then ignore that window and you can do it via the direct installation here.

OK. I proceeded with th first option because it said "...or add features to an existing installation". Isn't that what Management Studio is, a feature?
I ran into the same bizarre installation dialog as earlier. The attached screen shows that the installation requires me to install options, as if it thinks I am extending the SQL Server installation on that machine. I am adding a feature only.
Where am I going wrong?
The second option does nothing more than what I have been doing, opening the SQL Server installation program. And when I do, I do not see an option to install Client Components. I get a singled button to click :Install" or "Next" for example. I always end up with this stupid dialog which tells me I have nothing checked for instalation, but there is nothing to select.
This is not good...
Ok.. Steps to install SSMSE as per my second option here:

This would guide you through step by step snapshots to help you out..
If that is not helping, then something's messed up and request you to do the following:
1. Uninstall SQL Server Express which you just get it installed.
2. Proceed a new installation as per:
http://www.asql.biz/Artico
And download SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services instead of SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools provided in the step by step procedure.

It depents on what you want to do with it, if it's for testing of playing I would suggest to choose for SYSTEM.
