Dear all,

Any good step by step guide to installing sql server 2008 r2 procedure, step by step guide to installing sql server 2008 r2 SP2 and step by step guide to installing sql server 2008 r2 SP2 CU4?

the step by step guide for SP2 and CU4 for SQL server 2008 R2 should include the cluster and standalone machine installation.

Looks like you already have some pretty good links and suggestions...
Hi

... and of course you are at least going to apply this to a test instance or your workstation first, right?

Regards
  David
yes, it will
EugeneZ also give good reply too !
Those walkthroughs should give you what you need - for the service pack, there shouldn't be any difference at all between SQL 2008 and 2008 R2. For service packs, just accept all the default choices and you'll be fine.
The CU4 has the following component:

1) SQLServer2008R2-KB2777358-x64.exe
2) sqlncli.msi
3) rsSharePoint.msi
4)MasterDataServices.msi

do anyone one of your tried that before and know which one should be deploy, I just deploy all of them and it seems that only item 1 is needed, am I right?
ryanmccauley,

I just run the SP2 update, CU4 update will give exactly the same steps.

But what if we deploy SP2 and CU4 on cluster nodes? what should we do ?

it seems that this the SP2 and CU4 update do not need to stop the SQL server in advance !
Here attach some message after installing the SQL server 2008 R2 +SP2+CU4, anyone know why? specially the error of installatin error of database engine but it is working fine.

check if the errors like these were before; are they reoccurring or have the same timestamp when you did installs sp2 cu4?

some of the error you probably got during install: sql server was running, objects locked and as result info\warning log was recorded..

if sql server\ db \ cluster are working fine - I would not worry about these errors too much - however, keep eyes opened

EugeneZ,

"check if the errors like these were before; are they reoccurring or have the same timestamp when you did installs sp2 cu4?
"

Yes, some of them are reoccurring, but the DB is working fine. can't see why.

mark_wills,

"
Not sure why you are applying CU4 as well at this stage"

basically I don't mind to install it and as people in this group keep suggesting it, I would like to try.  if I dont' install it now, I don't think I have chance to install and Vendor said install the latest one and CU4 has no impact on their tools.

Yeah, I cna't tset it as no test platform for this at all but no platform upgraded to SQL server 2008 R2 also.
mark_wills,

"Not sure why you are applying CU4 as well at this stage. Please read : http://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=30437 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2527180 and decide if you really need CU4"

both link you send me is a downalod link, any other link doubt about the CU4 ?
Second link should be the CU4 contents - read through the bug list and see if any apply to you.

Also has a list of versions to double check against your current install.

Dont worry about the download link - was going to suggest re-applying in case of corruption.

You didnt mention when you got the errors - were there any prior to CU4 ?
mark_wills,

"You didnt mention when you got the errors - were there any prior to CU4 ? "

the error should be just after install SP2.

and after installing Cu4 the same thing happen also.

I remember the .net error and last time I saw that I post a ticket here and the correct reply is just restart it. as it can't just find the .net compiler something like this.

but this time after I reboot, the whole error still there.

I will install one more SQL server 2008 R2 server and see if the same thing happen again.
Arent they the same errors as before ?

Not too worried about the full text stuff - by the looks you werent using it.

It does look like you already have Visual Studio, or, it errored with Data Tiers - again not a real problem and can be fixed later (if you ever go to use it).

Some of those errors arent, some are warnings and really wouldnt be worried about SSIS using default package.

Questio though... Did you have any other instances running on that machine, and is this the first time attempted, and do you have Visual Studio installed ?
mark_wills,

some of them are some of them are not !

Hopefullly.

"It does look like you already have Visual Studio, or, it errored with Data Tiers - again not a real problem and can be fixed later (if you ever go to use it)."

No. I don't have this installed, but  I think the software (SQL Server 2005 Express or SQLserver 2008R2) install the component MS Vistual Studio C++ 2008 redistribute x64 9.0.xxx for me.

so  I can ignore it  and it is not related to SQL server 2008 R2 installation ?

"Some of those errors arent, some are warnings and really wouldnt be worried about SSIS using default package."

ok then ignore it.

"Questio though... Did you have any other instances running on that machine, and is this the first time attempted, and do you have Visual Studio installed ? "

I think it is the SQL server 2005 express edition, the monitoroing tools install it. but I remember that I just install the SQL server 2005 client component on it.

so this is not related?
This should be another clean machine I have, this only has one monitoring tools installed.

the other one withe Windows 2008 R2 on it but will install with SQL server 2005 to simulation on of our migration situation .
if you have fully functional installed sql server - you are good,''

some of the errors just informational
and can be ignored or if you wish - you can open an another EE questions for each of the errors or check web,

I would say; this case is resolved
EugeneZ,
