Question

Using variables in execute process task

Asked by: TheCommunicator

I am trying to understand this. I have made an execute process task to unzip some of the files with .rar extension. I am specifying the file name and output folder in the command line argument section and it works pretty fine.

Now, if I want to put it in For each loop container and pass the variable which I obtained from container to the execute process then how can I pass it? I have tried replacing  filename with the variable name which does not work. Do I have to specify it at a different place or differently?

set variables in Foreach loop container
and then,
You must choose the expression
and set Argument with your parameters then

by: TheCommunicatorPosted on 2009-11-04 at 21:09:42ID: 25746925

Well, couple of the things are happeinng.

I have specified variable  in For each loop file enumerator. Then came back to execute task and  did set expression with Arguments= User:: variable.

Now, argument field is blank and I am manually writting something like this:

e @[user:: variable] C:\Output

Now I ran the package and it actually opens the files  in that folder with Winrar. But does not AUTOMATICALLY  extract it as it was doing  when I was specifying absolute address.  after I stop debugging and try to edit execute task again then the argument field goes blank and I have to type every thing.
Something fishy........

by: TheCommunicatorPosted on 2009-11-04 at 21:17:21ID: 25746956

I think the problem with the variable binding because when I actually say arguments= User:: variable then it just takes that address of the folder in the argument field and thats the sole value with which it is binding the
whole argument field so It is not taking "e" as in extract as and extra command line  parameter.

by: reza_radPosted on 2009-11-04 at 21:24:14ID: 25746979

use a parameter for 'e' value
and use it like this:
@[user::eVar] @[user::filepathVar] @[user::desDirVar]

by: TheCommunicatorPosted on 2009-11-04 at 21:31:05ID: 25746997

And how do I assign e to @[user::eVar] ?

by: reza_radPosted on 2009-11-04 at 21:34:18ID: 25747008

set it as default,
create a new variable as eVar in package scope
as type string
with value e

I mean I have only defined variables through For each loop file enumerator only so I am not sure how to assign a character value to an SSIS variable

by: reza_radPosted on 2009-11-04 at 21:38:07ID: 25747019

look at attachment

by: TheCommunicatorPosted on 2009-11-05 at 00:07:55ID: 25747507

I am sorry for the late reply.

How did you open that window which you attached in the previous post? I am using VS 2008 and assumed that you are using 2005 thats why it looks little different. I did stick to the notion that  in this case, I can define variables in For each loop file container only.( If I am not assuming it wrong). I tried opening Package Explorer-->variables folder and tried to define a variable there but realized that its a place where you can just view them NOT define them.

Now, I have three variables in For each file loop container which contains my execute process task:

@[User::eVariable]--> Contains sole value 'e'
@[User::FolderContainer] --> No value defined and assuming that it will be by  default bound to what folder location I have defined in the collections tab.
@[User::OutPutPath]--> Location of the folder where the files have to be extracted. ( I am specifying this value manually as a string and contains value 'C:\Output'

Now, when I do
 Expressions--> Arguments=@[User::eVariable] @[User::FolderContainer] @[User::OutPutPath]

and press OK or "evaluate expression then it gives me following error:

" Expression can not be evaluated"

I told you this whole long process I suspect I might be making mistake somewhere else.

I am attaching a snapshot for your review

by: reza_radPosted on 2009-11-05 at 01:17:28ID: 25747793

write this and then evaluate:
@[User::eVariable]+" "+@[User::FolderContainer]+" "+@[User::OutPutPath]

by: TheCommunicatorPosted on 2009-11-05 at 23:16:40ID: 25757233

Hi,
 I am sorry to get back to you so late. actually I was away from  my desk.

So this is what I used:

@[User::eVariable] + " " + @[User::FolderContainer] + " " + @[User::OutPutPath]

and I  think its taking arguments right but something happened with WinRar which I am not able to get.  Can you take a look?

I am attaching the snapshot for you to look at. If you get a chance to look at please...

You have walked me through the solution so I think this is time to close the question. If you can come up with something then thats great or I will open a new question and you can assist me there.

It looses details when upload it.

by: reza_radPosted on 2009-11-06 at 05:00:40ID: 25758692

explain detail error here,because i can't see this picture good

by: TheCommunicatorPosted on 2009-11-06 at 15:25:15ID: 25763972

Well, it opens a Decalogue box called "Archive CSS.rar, where CSS.rar is the file which is being  worked upon.It has four tabs 1. Info 2. options 3. Comments 4. stx  and here comments tab is automatically selected.

Along with that there is a button called "Load comments file" and  field called achieve comment.

by: TheCommunicatorPosted on 2009-11-06 at 15:47:40ID: 25764095

One more thing when I click cancel then it goes away without doing its job  but when I click on by entering any random comment then it gives me following error:

!   Cannot create __rar_00.789
!   Access is denied.

by: reza_radPosted on 2009-11-06 at 21:21:14ID: 25765099

This seems that you used rar command instead of unrar
am i right?

by: TheCommunicatorPosted on 2009-11-06 at 23:04:32ID: 25765263

Hmmmmmmm I used 'e' and I think that stands for extract, right?

by: reza_radPosted on 2009-11-06 at 23:12:37ID: 25765276

Yes of course,
I mean what is exactly in Executable( in process tab)

by: TheCommunicatorPosted on 2009-11-06 at 23:33:24ID: 25765328

Here it is..........

by: reza_radPosted on 2009-11-06 at 23:53:56ID: 25765380

Problem is in your foreach loop variable mapping
go to foreach loop properties
in variable mapping tab
delete all records
add only container variable like this:
variable                   Index
User::Container     0

then run it

by: TheCommunicatorPosted on 2009-11-07 at 00:08:35ID: 25765410

Wow.. it did run.thank you so much for walking me through. But  there arises a  question that Foreach loop is the place where I had really defined other two variables too. Why should I remove it from there? So is it like I define them in For each loop and then they are stored in Variables folder, I can remove them from For each loop.

Or is it any other place where I can declare them?

by: reza_radPosted on 2009-11-07 at 00:22:55ID: 25765432

happy to hearing your problem solved
you can create variables anywhere in your ssis package
but this is main method:
right click on blank area in control flow
then select variables
you can see all of variables here
remember scope of each variable may vary, this can be whole package or special task or container

regards,

Great that was a great learning as well as problem solving. And you, having solved almost my 5 answers by now have, became my mentor. hehee..........
