The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Access runtime error 102

Tags: Microsoft, Access, 2003, Run-time error '102'      incorrect syntax near ','
I recently upsized my database to SQL server.  Now I get runtime error 102, incorrect syntax.  I am not sure on what to do.  Isn't Access suppost to make the conversion from VB to SQL?  Here is code:

Dim stDocName As String
Dim stLinkCriteria As String
    stDocName = "frmCharges"
    DoCmd.OpenForm stDocName, , , stLinkCriteria
Exit_int_Cust:
    Exit Sub
Err_int_Cust:
    MsgBox Err.Description
    Resume Exit_int_Cust

Hi trbaze,

I could be wrong but you are trying to convert some form to SQL (from Access) ? SQL doesn't have forms.

The database does contain forms and also reports.  I did the upsizing wizard to move the data to a SQL database.

Well SQL is only a database (powerfull but thats it) like Oracle, MySQL, Etc. You only have tables, views (querys), stored procedure and sum UDF functions. Also you have security and maintance features but you don't have forms and reports like in access.

To use SQL you must use (if you don't want to input data directly in the tables!) and tool like Visual Basic, C#, C++, etc.

02.24.2008 at 10:13AM PST, ID: 20970692
I tried to open one of the forms in Design View and it was giving me the same error.  I noticed that the controls were having a problem with the sql statement that was created from the Query.  It is not converting it properly.

02.24.2008 at 10:15AM PST, ID: 20970698
So what would be the best way to connect Access to a SQL database?

You are using Access to read/write in SQL?

What's the Recordsource for the form and for any subforms?

02.24.2008 at 10:39AM PST, ID: 20970775
What I did was upsize the entire database, including forms and reports to SQL database.  This created a database with the extension .ADP that included tables, forms, and reports.  It did not transition everything smoothly, as forms did not work anymore.
I would like the tables to be in a SQL server database and Access will be the front end(forms, reports).  What is the best way to do that?

02.24.2008 at 10:44AM PST, ID: 20970799

jpaulino is correct; SQL Server has no knowledge of your forms and reports, those would be maintained in Access while your data would be moved to SQL Server.

Again: What's the recordsource of your form and subform (if any)?

02.24.2008 at 10:58AM PST, ID: 20970850
The recordsource  are the tables.

02.24.2008 at 02:15PM PST, ID: 20971684

I have done it only to read information from SQL Server but I think you can keep the Access forms and reports and link tables to the SQL (this is possible). What I never tried is to use the forms to insert data back to the SQL.

It's funny if you work this way because you migrate the data to SQL and you will still use access to handle. :-)

Is the Form's Recordsource Property set to the name of the table? Or are you using a Query for this? Or is the .Recordsource set to an SQL STring?

Open the form in Design view and see what is in the Recordsource property.

An ADP provides direct access to the SQL Server tables. FYI, this now considered a "dead" technology and MS advises using a standard .mdb file with linked tables to your SQL Server.

02.25.2008 at 08:12AM PST, ID: 20976700
They are set to a query that pulls the info from the tables.

02.25.2008 at 08:25AM PST, ID: 20976820

Rank: Genius

Okay ... what is the SQL of that query? Is this a Stored Query? If so, can you open that query directly in Access (i.e. doubleclick on it)?

02.26.2008 at 12:12PM PST, ID: 20988265
It is an embedded query in the form.  The problem it was having was when I upsized, it show the query in SQL, where it started a WHERE statement, but nothing was written in WHERE.  I deleted the WHERE and it worked fine.  I under stand what you said about the ADP being a dead tech, but I do not know how to access the SQL server database to link the tables to a regular mdb.  I'm not sure where they are stored and what there called.  When I upsized, the name I gave the dtabase was used for naming the ADP file.

Is the db working now?

02.26.2008 at 02:30PM PST, ID: 20989689
The ADP still does not work.  The forms do not work right and I am not very skilled at SQL programing.

02.26.2008 at 02:42PM PST, ID: 20989772

Sounds like you might need to consider outside help with this ... moving from Access to SQL Server can be a big step, even for experienced devs.
