The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How write a VBA and stored procedure code that handle optional parameter.

How write a VBA and stored procedure code that handle optional parameter.
Access Version: 2002
SQL Version : SQL 2000 Server

I have an ADP Access database and a form that has a combo box named Dept.
When a user click on the Dept combo box; if the value is not null then
run the stored procedure Get_SO_After_Dept_Update_1.
If however, the value is null then
run the stored procedure Get_SO_After_Dept_Update_2.

Everything work very well. Now how do I go about to modified the VBA code
and the Stored Procedure code so that I will only have one stored
procedure to deal with instead of two. Another word, whether the value in
the Dept combo box is null or not null the VBA and the stored
procedure code will run.

Combo Box Name : Dept
Control Source :
Row Source Type: Table/View/StoredProc
Row Source :

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
VBA Code in an Access ADP Form

Private Sub Dept_AfterUpdate()
Dim iDept As Integer

If Not IsNull(Me.Dept) Then
'Get_SO_After_Dept_Update_1 is a stored procedure that resides in SQL 2000 Server
Me.so.RowSource = "Exec [Get_SO_After_Dept_Update_1]'" & Me.Dept.Value & "'"
Else
'Get_SO_After_Dept_Update_2 is a stored procedure that resides in SQL 2000 Server
Me.so.RowSource = "Exec [Get_SO_After_Dept_Update_2]"
End If
End Sub

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Stored Procedure Get_SO_After_Dept_Update_1

CREATE PROCEDURE Get_SO_After_Dept_Update_1
@iDept int
AS SELECT DISTINCT [1_Job - Parent].SONumber, Ref_DepartmentID.ID
FROM dbo.[1_Job - Parent]
INNER JOIN dbo.Ref_DepartmentID
ON dbo.[1_Job - Parent].Department_Name = dbo.Ref_DepartmentID.DepartmentName
WHERE dbo.Ref_DepartmentID.ID = @iDept
GO

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Stored Procedure Get_SO_After_Dept_Update_2

CREATE PROCEDURE Get_SO_After_Dept_Update_2
AS SELECT DISTINCT [1_Job - Parent].SONumber, Ref_DepartmentID.ID
FROM dbo.[1_Job - Parent]
INNER JOIN dbo.Ref_DepartmentID
ON dbo.[1_Job - Parent].Department_Name = dbo.Ref_DepartmentID.DepartmentName

You just specify a default value for the parameter to make it optional, then use isnull to compare the field to itself if you didn't supply a parameter:
1:
2:
3:
4:
5:
6:
7:
CREATE PROCEDURE Get_SO_After_Dept_Update_1
@iDept int = null
AS SELECT DISTINCT [1_Job - Parent].SONumber, Ref_DepartmentID.ID
FROM dbo.[1_Job - Parent]
INNER JOIN dbo.Ref_DepartmentID
ON dbo.[1_Job - Parent].Department_Name = dbo.Ref_DepartmentID.DepartmentName
WHERE dbo.Ref_DepartmentID.ID = isnull(@iDept, dbo.Ref_DepartmentID.ID)
Open in New Window

Try this it should work it checks through ok in query analyser.

SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO

CREATE  PROCEDURE dbo.Get_SO_After_Dept_Update (@iDept int=Null)
AS
SET XACT_ABORT ON
SET NOCOUNT ON

IF @iDept = 1
BEGIN
      SELECT DISTINCT [1_Job - Parent].SONumber, Ref_DepartmentID.ID
      FROM dbo.[1_Job - Parent]
      INNER JOIN dbo.Ref_DepartmentID
      ON dbo.[1_Job - Parent].Department_Name = dbo.Ref_DepartmentID.DepartmentName
      WHERE dbo.Ref_DepartmentID.ID = @iDept
END
IF @iDept = 2
BEGIN
      SELECT DISTINCT [1_Job - Parent].SONumber, Ref_DepartmentID.ID
      FROM dbo.[1_Job - Parent]
      INNER JOIN dbo.Ref_DepartmentID
      ON dbo.[1_Job - Parent].Department_Name = dbo.Ref_DepartmentID.DepartmentName
END

GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF
GO
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO

gardmanIT, that can only be used to get department 1 or all departments. What if you want to get department 42?

If you want to pick a query depending on if there is a parameter or not, you would do like this:

if (@iDept is null) begin
   select ...
   where dbo.Ref_DepartmentID.ID = @iDept
end else begin
   select ...
end

It says:

"Everything work very well. Now how do I go about to modified the VBA code
and the Stored Procedure code so that I will only have one stored
procedure to deal with instead of two."

So, he wants it to do work exactly as it does now, but with an option parameter in the stored procedure.

It was a while since I got a specification that precise. ;)
