The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Help in coverting an Access 2000 Front-end to talk to a SQL Server

Tags: Microsoft, Access, 2000
I've got an Access 2000 Front-end that currently uses the Jet engine to talk to an Access 2000 backend.  I want to convert the front-end including recordset code to talk to SQL Server 2005.  I can go to a new version fo Access if that would help.  I'm looking for advice, classes, books, and help documents to bring me up to speed.  Note: I will probably convert to Access Project as I understand that is the best way.

>I want to convert the front-end including recordset code to talk to SQL Server 2005.
Are you saying you'd like to convert your data source from Access 2000 to SQL 2005, and link your front-end directly to SQL 2005?

Yes.  I'm looking for better handling of really large tables (>200K records).  I would like a speed increase also.  I would give my back-end to MIT and they would convert it.  I need to do the front-end part which is mainly the queries, the code, the forms, and the table links.

schmir1,

Certainly any expert here can give you excellent advice on upsizing to a SQL backend.

<I'm looking for better handling of really large tables (>200K records). >
In the world of databases, 200k records is not considered all that "Large"
See here:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Database/Miscellaneous/Q_22483338.html
An average sized table (25 fields) with 200k records is still no big deal for Access.

<I would like a speed increase>
Just because you send you backend to SQL, does not necessarily mean you will get a big increase in speed.
Many times it is the Front-end (sloppy coding, huge forms, Inserted graphics) that really "slow down" your database.

However, if you need to take advantage of all the SQL "Tools" (Tuning, backups, Security, scalability), then that is a very valid reason.

All I know is that Access tends to crash and I loose records when the tables start getting over 200K.

Some of my forms are slow in opening, I think because they have many text boxes.  Not sure if SQL would help that.

What is really slow is some of the complicated queries that I do.  Shouldn't I get a big preformance increase if the SQL Server does the work and just passes the results of the query.

schmir1,

<Access tends to crash and I loose records when the tables start getting over 200K.>
I have some tables with over 500k records with no issues at all.
I have never heard of anything like this hapening, unless something else is at play.

<Some of my forms are slow in opening, I think because they have many text boxes.  Not sure if SQL would help that.>
Again, SQL sever is the back end, it basically only effects the front end where retrieving records is concerned.
<I think because ...>
Well you have to be *sure*.
:-)

<What is really slow is some of the complicated queries that I do.  Shouldn't I get a big preformance increase if the SQL Server does the work and just passes the results of the query. >
Again, "Big preformance" is relative. There are many factors that contribute to how fast a query runs.
But yes, in general SQL Server will process queries more efficiently than Access.

All I am trying to say here is that you should not just blindly say the going with SQL Server will give you a "Big" increase in performance.
There are too many factors that determine the speed of your application.

That being said, SQL Server Express is free and it would not hurt to try.
But SQL Server 2005 has many "versions" ranging in price from Free to $25,000USD!
If you purchased the 25k version and only got a 5% improvement, would that have been worth it?

The force driving my to SQL Server is that it would be more robust and reliable.  I'm a little worried when I start losing records.  I'm hoping for a performance increase also.

have you read about postgres - it offers a lot of performance > some say more than oraclee, ms sql and its open source (FREE)

If I were you, I would try to fix this BEFORE going to SQL Server.
