The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Reduce corruption, Access versions

I'm developing a database in Acc2k3. My end users are starting the migration to Acc2k7 because of new computers that come with Office 2007 already loaded. I've read that one of the things you can do to lower the risk of corruption on split databases is to keep front ends and back end in the same version. Is this as simple as preventing users with Acc2k7 from converting the database(s)? Or, actually keeping all users in the same version of Office?

I see no compelling reason to convert an MDB to an ACCDB.  You can run A2003 mdb's in the A2007 environment.

Based on what we've  seen here on EE regarding A2007 issues, I can almost guarantee you that there will be some kind of weird issue if you convert.

Obviously, the easiest thing to do is to have all users use one version of office. In my experience, I have had users on 97, 2k and 2k7 on the same database but I kept the tables in SQL and the users were all accessing different versions of the frontend.

Most companies want all of their users on one version anyway. What are the majority of your users using? Another thing to keep in mind is that you can run more than one version of office on a machine with little to no issues if necessary.

THe best thing for you to do if you are unable to convert everyone would be to keep your tables in 2k3 and have two versions of the front end, one for 2k3 and one for 2k7, so they would not have to convert and you could test properly during development.

OK, that answers that question.

>>Another thing to keep in mind is that you can run more than one version of office on a machine with little to no issues if necessary.

I have not been able to setup multiple versions on a single partition of a machine without running into problems eventually. Is there some magic setup that bullet-proofs the installations? I have both 2003 and 2007 loaded but on separate paritions each with it's own operating system.

i haven't had any issues. but when you do the initial install you need to create a second folder for the new version. (i.e. 2k3 in Microsoft Office folder and 2k7 in Microsoft Office 2k7 folder that you created.)

This keeps them independent. Now 2k7 does throw you a kicker wanting to configure itself if you have most recently been in an earlier version of office. This takes a few minutes at most, but will only be an issue for you and not your users that are running only one version of the application.

"Now 2k7 does throw you a kicker wanting to configure itself if you have most recently been in an earlier version of office. "

AND ... when you switch back to A/O2003 the next time.  So far, no one has a solution for this. It can be fixed in Excel, Word etc ... but not Access.  It's basically an ANNOYANCE with a capital A !!

In fact, see this just completed Q for some good links on that subject:

I hope you are monitoring every single expert (and not just ME)  in the Access zone to be sure they are not adding a little late night humor to a Q !!  And Ribbons were 'on topic'.

Over the past few years I haven't had the luxury of enough free time to monitor anyone.  Even if I did, I rather do other things with my time.

But if I do come across something in my travels or something gets brought to my attention, then yes I do make a comment.  And I don't play favorites when it comes to following EE policy.

Once again and I'm starting to sound like a broken record, this is something that has been mentioned to you before.  Mbizup has cleaned up several such threads in the past and I will be deleting all the off-topic comments in this thread.

<<hope you are monitoring every single expert (and not just ME)  in the Access zone to be sure they are not adding a little late night humor to a Q !!  And Ribbons were 'on topic'.>>

Ribbons, Prozac, sleeping pills, and staying up late have nothing to do with the original question.  As I said comments such as these belong in the lounge.  Not in a thread answering a question from a member.

If you want to hold a conversation with someone, do it else where.
