The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Import a Text File into Excel Using a VBA Routine

VBA Code Request

I have a software package that exports data in a text file in the following format.  It is split into 7 columns each column seperated by 5 spaces.  To signify a new row there are four spaces then a carriage return.  I need to write a simple code routine that I can attach to a button in Excel.  The button when clicked will let me select the text file (via the normal File Cirectory method) Im trying to import and then the data will be added into an Excel sheet in columns A to G and over as many rows as there are carriage returns in the text file.  For info the file is constructed like this where * indicates a space and CR indicates a carriage return.  Note:  There are thousands of lines!!!!

*101*****102*****103*****104*****105*****106*****107****CR
*108*****109*****110*****111*****112*****113*****114****CR
*115*****116*****117*****118*****119*****120*****121****CR
etc. etc

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Hi sydodman,

You can use this macro....

    Sub ImportTextFile()
        Dim FilePath As String
        FilePath = Application.GetOpenFilename("Text Files (*.txt),*.txt", , "Select Text File", , False)
        If FilePath = "False" Then Exit Sub
        With ActiveSheet.QueryTables.Add(Connection:="TEXT;" & FilePath, Destination:=Range("A1"))
            .PreserveFormatting = True
            .SaveData = True
            .AdjustColumnWidth = False
            .TextFileParseType = xlDelimited
            .TextFileTextQualifier = xlTextQualifierDoubleQuote
            .TextFileConsecutiveDelimiter = True
            .TextFileSpaceDelimiter = True
            .TextFileColumnDataTypes = Array(1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1)
            .Refresh BackgroundQuery:=False
            .Delete
        End With
        Range([B1], [B1].End(xlDown)).Offset(0, -1).Delete xlToLeft
    End Sub

Wayne

That works very well and Im just being lazy now but...

If I then try to open a different file it puts it into the A1 column again and shifts the data already there across to the right.  Is there anyway that when I open a new file it can first delete all the data in columns A to G and then put the new data into these cells?

Thanks in advance

Put this at the start of the macro....

    Range("A:G").ClearContents

Sorry, one last question how can I specify that the values are loaded onto another sheet
I have tried...
Sheets("RawData").Activate
and
Sheets("RawData").Select

at the start of the macro but it returns the error "The destination range is not on the same worksheet the query is being created on"

Thanks again!!!

There are a few other places you need to specify the worksheet as well. It'd be easier if most of the code is within another With block....

Sub ImportTextFile()
    Dim FilePath As String
    FilePath = Application.GetOpenFilename("Text Files (*.txt),*.txt", , "Select Text File", , False)
    If FilePath = "False" Then Exit Sub
    With Worksheets("RawDate")
        Intersect(.UsedRange, .[A:G]).ClearContents
        With .QueryTables.Add(Connection:="TEXT;" & FilePath, Destination:=.Range("A1"))
            .PreserveFormatting = True
            .SaveData = True
            .AdjustColumnWidth = False
            .TextFileParseType = xlDelimited
            .TextFileTextQualifier = xlTextQualifierDoubleQuote
            .TextFileConsecutiveDelimiter = True
            .TextFileSpaceDelimiter = True
            .TextFileColumnDataTypes = Array(1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1)
            .Refresh BackgroundQuery:=False
            .Delete
        End With
        .Range(.[B1], .[B1].End(xlDown)).Offset(0, -1).Delete xlToLeft
    End With
End Sub
