Creating an error message if linked file is currently locked or open allowing the user to skip that file

I currently have a transferspreadsheet function that links to excel, runs an append query, closes connection, then repeats to grab all excel files in a specified location. However, I'm running into an issue that if the excel file is locked for editing it basically crashes my system. Is there a way to add error handling to my function that if the file is open/locked then to prompt the user to either close excel or to skip that file/close the connection/then continue with the function? Let me know what you may need for this to make better sense. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.
