The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

What is the maximum text length in VBA textbox control on an MS Access Form?

Tags: Microsoft, Access, 2003, Using VBA
I code normally in Visual Basic 6.0.  The textbox control in VB has a multiline parameter and the maximum text length seems to be very large (64kb I think)  However, in VBA (Visual Basic Access) the textbox control does not have a multiline parameter and..  the maximum length of the text seems to be somewhere around 2048 characters (get error 2176) if try to put more text than that.
Can someone tell me how to add the normal MS textbox control (API version) or get the VB 6.0 textbox control added to VBA (my access project)?
I am building a long list of text lines from a file for a user to view, but I get the error 2176 after about 2048 characters.   I need at least 10,000 characters.
Thanks

what about using a rich text box control?

03.18.2008 at 03:49PM PDT, ID: 21156931
I tried to add that control to my Access Form (from get more controls) but got a message that my access application "does not support this active X control" and I do not know which reference to add in VBA to be able to use it -  or - I do not know why I get the message.  Also, if  I do get that to work, how do I know that the target PCs (not mine) will have the correct DLL or whatever is required to use the control?

I found an example of how to add the Microsoft OS API for messagebox  (vs msgbox) that allowed me to do a non-modal message box in Access VBA, so I though I could do the same with the textbox and get the OS version.  Would that be a solution, and if so, how do I add it to my code?

As rocki said, use a richtextbox control ... I have no idea what good a messagbox API would be for this, but be aware that Access is quite finicky in regards to ActiveX controls (even those which come from MS).

Stephen Lebans has a great example of using a RichTextBox:

www.lebans.com\richtextbox.htm

In regards to distribution - you would need the rights to distribute the RTB; generally this comes with the Office Developer's Edition, or with VB 6.0 ... if you don't have either of those, there's always www.fmsinc.com and their Total Access Memo ... pricey, but very nice.

Lets forget rich textbox.  I do not have the rights to distribute, nor do I have the $ to purchase as my coding is volunteer for a state science fair.  I looked at www.lebans.com/richtext.htm and that is big overkill. Also I don't need anything finicky for sure.  So,  I will spend a few days researching more.  In the mean time ,if anyone can share how I can just use the VB 6.0 textbox control in Access VBA that would solve the problem. Should be some reference to add to get the control to show up in VBA 'more controls'
I will be away from computer a lot so may not get back quickly to replys.

Apologies for my dumbness here as its been over a year since I last used Access - some might say that is a good thing :)

Multilines should exist in Access textbox, certainly when typing you can hit alt-enter to get a new line.

Anyways, not sure if this would work for you, use of a memo field, not sure if that would do 10k lines.
Accepted Solution

My apologies also,  Multiline had nothing to do with this (my memory of VB 6 was mistaken). Yes, the VBA textbox is multiline, and I have that working.
The Problem is the limit of the amount of text that can be put into the textbox
In VB 6.0 you can set max and ... it can be very large  (64kb?)...
in VBA it is limited to ~2048 characters (no documentation - just get an error if try to do more).
In VBA, there is no property to set or expand the limit.
I will look at memo field in a table, bound to the textbox and see if can get more characters.
Will get back probably tomorrow.

I did manage a work around using a memo field which holds upt to 64kb of characters.
Thanks

I would still like to know if I can add a VB 6.0 textbox to VBA for access.  I will open a new question for that one later
