The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Currentdb.Openrecordset - unable to get recordcount
Tags: Microsoft, MS Access, Currentdb
Hello All: This should be simple but is elusive for me. Ultimately I need the record count from a sql statement, so I don't the actual recordset; merely a count or records that satify teh qry would suffice. But if I have to use a recordset, this is what I am using:

Dim rsCheck As New ADODB.Recordset
Set rsCheck = CurrentDb.OpenRecordset("select 1 from data where account = " & CheckAcctNum & " and office = " & CheckOfficeNum)
                    rsCheck.MoveLast
                    CheckOffAcctCount = rsCheck.RecordCount
                    rsCheck.Close

When I qry CheckOffAcctCount in the debugger it's always zero.

The db has an open connection. What gives???

if you really only need the count:
1:
2:
3:
4:
Dim rsCheck As New ADODB.Recordset
Set rsCheck = CurrentDb.OpenRecordset("select count(*) c from data where account = " & CheckAcctNum & " and office = " & CheckOfficeNum)
                    CheckOffAcctCount = rsCheck.fields("c").value
                    rsCheck.Close

Just tried it and it still returns a zero.

{wild guess}
If account and office are text values, and not numeric, then you'll need to surround teh values you pass to them with singe quote marks.

Set rsCheck = CurrentDb.OpenRecordset("select 1 from data where account = '" & CheckAcctNum & "' and office = '" & CheckOfficeNum & "'")

05.07.2008 at 08:56AM PDT, ID: 21517733
They are both numeric. I tried it anyway and I still get a 0.

then you must be checking wrongly, using the wrong numbers, checking the wrong table, or the wrong database...

05.07.2008 at 10:23AM PDT, ID: 21518496
Nope! I may be using the currentdb wrong, because I changed rsCheck to open on it's own and it gave me the count expected [see below].
SQLString = "select * from data where account = " & CheckAcctNum & " and office = " & CheckOfficeNum
                    rsCheck.Open SQLString, con, adOpenKeyset, adLockReadOnly
                    rsCheck.MoveLast
                    rsCheck.MoveFirst
                    CheckOffAcctCount = rsCheck.RecordCount
                    rsCheck.Close

I'm still curious why the currentdb didn't work for me. Is there something special about the connection I should know/use?

>Dim rsCheck As New ADODB.Recordset
This uses ADO

>Set rsCheck = CurrentDb.OpenRecordset("select 1 from data where account = " & CheckAcctNum & " and office = " & CheckOfficeNum)
This uses DAO, as CurrentDb is a DAO.Database object
This line will error, as you can't assign a DAO method to an ADO object.

ohhhh. You get the points. Good catch. I guess it didn't err b/c I resumed next. BTW - do you know if I could use the current db at all?

05.07.2008 at 12:43PM PDT, ID: 21519696
Split the points because the count suggestion was creative. Thanx!

>do you know if I could use the current db at all?

Dim db as DAO.Database
Set db = CurrentDb

Dim rs as DAO.Recordset  'If you are referencing both DAO and ADO, then you have to prefix appropriately.  Fun stuff.
Set rs = db.OpenRecordset("SELECT blah blah blah")

THanks for the split.  Good luck with your project.  -Jim
