Question

How do I import a text file with strange format?

Asked by: GeneBat

HI Everyone,

I need to import data in a text file. The data has three fields MONTH YEAR ENROLLED under these fields the data looks like this:
       MONTH         YEAR     ENROLLED
   -----------  -----------  -----------
            11         2007            1
                       2007            1
                       2007            1
                       2007            1
                       2007            1
                       2007            1
                       2007            1
                           *               7
I only need the MONTH YEAR and TOTAL Number under ENROLLED can I write code to search for the star * and then tell the code to give me that number in this case 7? In other words the data would come in looking like this below:
MONTH YEAR ENROLLED
11           2007       7

  • enrolled.txt
    • 465 bytes

    Here's some sample data about the format I'm talking about thanks.

is your attached txt file the proper format? is it not possible for you to manually change this to a more neatr format, one that access can process?

by: GeneBatPosted on 2009-04-29 at 08:23:28ID: 24261499

I can do that manually but some times I would have 4000 number 1's not just the 7 or 8 number ones you see there. I was thinking if I could search for the star(*) and then get the number next to it in the database that would help. My database table would  read like this;MONTH 12, YEAR 2006, ENROLLED 2498. Again, I just need the MONTH, YEAR, ENROLLED numbers so the data would come in 12, 2006, 2498... hope this helps!

Is this a sample of a typical file?
Or might one text file contain many of these "Groupings?
For example:

1

         MONTH         YEAR     ENROLLED
   -----------  -----------  -----------
            12         2006            1
                       2006            1
                       2006            1
                       2006            1
                              -----------
                          *         2116
45

         MONTH         YEAR     ENROLLED
   -----------  -----------  -----------
            10         2006            1
                       2006            1
                       2006            1
                       2006            1
                       2006            1
                       2006            1
                       2006            1
                             -----------
                          *         2498

Will you be importing one of these files or many?

Please explain the exact steps you want the user to perform to complete this operation.

I would be importing one text file that would have many data elements like you show in the example. But I only need the MONTH 12, YEAR 2006, ENROLLED 2116 as well as MONTH 10, YEAR 2006, ENROLLED 2498 for as many times as needed. Is this possible?

by: boag2000Posted on 2009-05-06 at 18:24:12ID: 24321505

Anything is possible.

The issue is that this will take a fair amout of time to "Parse" this data.

As rockiroads asked eariler; Can the system that generates this file be instructed to output it in a more structured format?
