How is it possible to set the scrollbars on a unbound subform

i use a sidebar switchboard which inserts the relevant forms into a subform called subfrmwindow... however it does not show the horizontal scroll bar. i've set the scrollbars to both on the form that goes into the subform. however it only shows the vertial scrollbar
any ideas?
