The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Access form/subform-default subform to new record
Tags: Microsoft, Office- Access, 2003
I have a form/subform linked by Organization_ID.  The subform populates the Donation table.  The filter is working fine but I would like it to default to a new record in the subform when the correct Organization_ID on the main screen is chosen.  Currently I have a button in the subform to go to the new record.
I have attached a screen shot.

The  best case scenario is to default to a new record but also restrict scrolling through the previous records so that data is not changed after the fact accidentally.

If you set your subform to:

    Data Entry: yes

... it will always display a blank record, and not show any existing records. You can also have a button to toggle between "view donations" and "add donations" by using something like the snippet below. It's meant for a toggle button called tglView with Default Value: False.

I hope this helps

Please post images as JPG or PNG pictures ... we look at hundreds of postings a day, and it's kind of a pain to download the image and fire off Word each time.

What do you mean by "filter? Are you filtering the Main or subForm, or are you referring to the Master/Child links between the Main and Subform?

You can force the subform to a New Record when you move to a different ID, but it's not as simple as it sounds. First, add this to the form you're using as a Subform:

Function GoToNewRecord() As Boolean
  DoCmd.RunCommand acCmdRecordsGoToNew
End Function

Now, in your Main form, do this in the current event of your Form:

'/in the Main Form
Sub Form_Current()
  Me.NameOfYourSubformCONTROL.Form.GoToNewRecord
End Sub

This would add a new record to the Subform EVERY TIME YOU MOVED TO A NEW RECORD IN THE MAINFORM!! If this isn't what you want, then please go into a bit more detail of the exact scenario/steps needed.

Note the NameOfYourSubformCONTROL ... this is the name of the Control you're using on the Main form, and may or may NOT be the name of the form you're using as the SourceObject ... open your mainform in design view, highlight the subform control (i.e. click it ONCE) and see what your Properties dialog reports ... this is the value you use for NameOfYourSubformControl.

harfang, that was super easy to set the data entry to yes!  worked perfectly.  I am not able to get the toggle button to work though?  I changed the name of the form to my name and added the button called tglView but it is showing the error on the first toggle line.
thanks so much!

In the line:

    With subDonationsSubform.Form

"subDonationsSubform" is the name of the control, i.e. the subform/subreport control, not the name of the form you display therein. It might be something like "Child42" for example.

When you get an error, it's useful to give the error message also. I'm guessing it's a compile error (if you have Option Explicit), or that the object does not exist at run time.

I am very dense today....  Does the toggle button go on the main form or on the subform?  How do I find the control name for this subform (no eye rolling, please :)).

I am getting Runtime Error 438
Object doesn't support this property or method.

The toggle button is meant for the main form. To find the name of the subform/subreport object, open your main form in design view and  click *once* on the subform. The property sheet displays the name of the control. The second click lets you edit the subform itself.

If you want, here is the version for a toggle button on the subform.

Better luck this time!
