The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Have created sweet Access Drag n' Drop code.  How do I package it?
Tags: 2007
Hi,

I am a non-programmer who can code just enough to be dangerous.  I have created a pretty sophisticated database that would benefit greatly from having a powerful "drag n' drop" functionality that doesn't come with Access.  As they say, necessity is the mother of invention, so over the last few years, I have developed something that really takes very little VB code to run, yet is quite robust.

A few features:
1. Allows the user to click on an invisible button on any form, and based upon pretty much any code the user wants to run (cut, paste, append, filter, etc), then "drag" that data in the form of a floating form to any other spot and "drop" it.
2. The forms are fully customizeable as well and can display any data the user wants.
3. One very strong feature is that it allows the user to drag from a continuous form and drop onto another continuous form without "pre-selecting" the drop record - this is VERY handy!

Ok, anyway, I've created this really awesome tool and I want to be able to distribute it to others, but I have NO IDEA on how to package it so that others could use it and still have my underlying code "hidden".

Can someone point me to a publication that explains how or just give me some ideas?

Thanks!

Access has not such thing as package

You can create a MDE file that hides your code.
-but- a newbe can break it down...

Tools menu-->Database utilities-->make MDE file

05.08.2008 at 01:27PM PDT, ID: 21528171
I don't want to package the whole database, just the drag n' drop tool I have created.

05.09.2008 at 12:09AM PDT, ID: 21530865
If the  the drag n' drop tool you have created is part of your Access code then Access has not such thing as package. You can create a MDE file that hides your code.

MitchellVII,

Stephen Lebans has an Access site full of handy utilities he has "Packaged"
http://www.lebans.com/mousewheelonoff.htm
http://www.lebans.com/DownloadFiles/A2KMonthCalenderVer205.zip
http://www.lebans.com/DownloadFiles/A2000SnapshotToPDFver751.zip
... and may more.

Most of which are built in a way that you do not have to "Register" them.

You can emailing him and ask about the process/tools he uses

Hi Mitch

I was about to email you for this code, as I recall you mentioned it earlier, then I saw this Q :)

You want to hide your code, yet make the user use the code,
I think your option in Access to the best of my knowledge would be to to convert it to an MDE like AkisC suggested, However,
the user will refer to your mde from his mdb, then the functions can be used.

I remember 2 examples:
1. Scale and Resize Access Forms

Download this zip file:
http://www.developershandbook.com/Downloads/ADHResize.zip

it includes an mde file which contains the code,
and in order for you to use the code for your own mdb, here is how to use it (from the included pdf file):

To include this functionality in your own applications, follow these steps:
1. Copy ADHResize2K.mde (or ADHResize97.mde, if youre using
Access 97) to a convenient location.
2. In your database, use the Tools|References menu to set a
reference to the appropriate MDE file. Youll need to use the
Browse button to find the fileit wont appear on the list
automatically.

2.  ReportToPDF by Lebans.com

Please read the following link:
http://www.lebans.com/reporttopdf.htm

you will notice that the initial product was an mde file which locked the code, and the users would link to it.

It is later that Lebans converted this mde code to a standard DLL file.

Ok, so you know how to make an mde for your product,

This is how you can make an ActiveX DLL:

Hey jaffer,

You know, what I really need is a programmer to partner with me on packaging this thing.  Even though I wrote it (more like cobbled it together), I don't have the programming knowledge to package and implement it effectively in user's db's.

From what I have seen as far as "drag n' drop" add-ons, there is NOTHING out there right now even close to the power that this code provides.  Weird thing is that, unlike your typical Lebans App, which consists of 20 pages or more of code, this thing is maybe 2 pages.

So, my problem is, how do I find a programmer that can partner with me, but who won't just steal my code and do their own thing with it?

05.16.2008 at 12:07PM PDT, ID: 21585517
LOL

Ya, I know what you are saying,
in fact I have seem some of my code which I did for someone, after a few years when he needed my help one more time, I saw his name on it as the developer, which made me smile, which really shows how small/cheap some people are.

I am NOT a programmer (although I do it on a daily bases), I consider my self as a heavy stuburn user, who doesn't accept NO as an answer :)

But, you having gone so far with the code, why don't you dip your feet into deeper waters, and try the ActiveX way (I haven't tried it myself though), then you can think of the next step.

If I can be of any help, let me know.

jaffer

05.16.2008 at 01:33PM PDT, ID: 21586225
Yeah jaffer, I may make the ActiveX thing my weekend project.

05.16.2008 at 01:34PM PDT, ID: 21586234
P.S., Is it just me or has Experts Exchange gone down hill?  More and more often I am posting questions that get no response/

05.16.2008 at 01:57PM PDT, ID: 21586373
I haven't been active for a while, I have my hands full,
besides I have been travelling more than usual.

But I have seen new blood, which makes this site going.

I noticed the community is unlike before, we even used to celebrate milestones for each Expert, which really made us a close cyber family.

The site have this service, where if your post didn't get a reply, you can ask the moderator, where s/he will email whole bunch of us, which gives you a better chance of getting attention.

Please let me know how it goes with your project, it would be very interesting to know.

By the way I sent you an email, which I took from your profile.

MitchellVII,

Not to be-little your accomplishment, but Free custom drag and drop functionality in Access has been around for quite a while,:
;-)

http://www.peterssoftware.com/dd.htm

Even MS has a technique:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287642

Here is the google search:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=microsoft+Access+drag+and+drop

Drag and drop code is also available in many of the Access "Bible" type books:
(Again, pretty much free)
http://www.amazon.com/Building-Microsoft%C2%AE-Access-Applications-Other/dp/0735620393/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1210965429&sr=1-19

http://www.amazon.com/Alison-Balters-Mastering-Microsoft-Development/dp/0672329328/ref=sr_1_31?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1210965588&sr=1-31

http://www.amazon.com/Access-2002-Desktop-Developers-Handbook/dp/0782140092/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1210965629&sr=1-8

Have you analyzed all of these products\techniques and determined that your method is really unique?

The developer who helped me get started in programming even modified some code he found, to do drag and drop between forms and Report while maintaining the associated code.

With the advent of the web, google, p2p, global competition, ...ect., is actual quite difficult to make money on developing anything.
Almost everything a developer would need is available for free.

I'll give you one great example:
FMSinc is a company that markets high end developer products (at a premium price)
They have a product "Code tools": http://www.fmsinc.com/vb6/CodingTools.html
($200USD)

Most of what Code Tools does, MZtools does for free! (http://www.mztools.com/v3/mztools3.aspx)

Almost everything at the Lebans site is unique and free!
Another example:
I have been on EE for over four years now.
I have seen some incredibly complex and intricate solutions posted by some of the top experts here.
Any one of these solutions could have been considered as "marketable".

Most of the top experts here do not sell anything, they make money developing.

Besides, if hackers can break into government computers, they can surely decipher an Access custom add-in, template, wizard or dll file
There are tools that will reverse engineer anything.

< Even though I wrote it (more like cobbled it together),>
...So you want to market a "Cobbled together" app?
Do you have robust error handling?
Do you have real technical documentation on how to implement it?
Will you provide support?
Will it work in all Versions of Access including 2007?

jjafferr is being modest, he is one of those "Top experts" I spoke of.
He has blown me away with some of his posts.
He is correct the ActiveX might be the best way.
Here is my favorite "free, (hint... hint) tutorial on creating ActiveX controls:
http://www.developer.com/net/vb/article.php/1539541

Again, I am not trying to be-little your accomplishment, or convince you not to pursue this, but like jjafferr states, people will "Borrow" your code all the time.
Unless you have created some custom algorithm that no one else has thought of or can duplicate, you really cant stop someone from using it.
Unless you patent it and are prepared to fight (Financially!) every violator. (Even if they are in Taiyuan, China or Nikolsk, Russia)

Most things like this I do for personal advancement (ex.: my linked/Static Table converter or Custom Database search tool)
It increases my own personal knowledge base and makes me feel good!
;-)

Good luck with this endeavor!
;-)

boag,

I've seen the "drag n' drop" solutions people are offering online.  Frankly, they suck.

MitchellVII,

<I've seen the "drag n' drop" solutions people are offering online.  Frankly, they suck.>
Fair enough.
;-)

You know it is funny...
If you get this working you will probably make more money teaching people how to package there own apps!
;-)

BTW most of the top experts here have contact info listed in thier profiles.
Have you considered "Partnering" with any of them?

Again, good luck, and keep us posted!
