combobox index on mousedown

One control in a form is a combo box. The control is bound to a query. The query is a summary query -- that prevents me from changing the value with the combobox directly. But is there a way to get the item in the pull-down list when I click on it (like with a mousedown event)? I have the rest of the code written -- it changes a value in a table and does a Requery to display the change. I just need to know what I clicked on (even its index number would be good enough).
