Need form to find record, allow user to modify fields and save

I'm a novice stuck with modifying forms created by someone much more knowledgeable than myself! and who is no longer available. Here's the current problem I'm stuck on:

I need a form where the user can enter a sample number to be edited. The form then needs to be populated with the fields from that sample so the user can change and save them. The sample numbers are unique.

This sounds so easy, but nothing I've tried - from a simple "Find" button to Queries - has worked.
