The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

import excel file based on date criteria
Tags: access vba
Hi,

I have a form in access which has two date fields.  I have a series of tables saved in excel which i would like to import based on the dates selected on the form.  The excel files are named as follows:
20080501.xls
20080502.xls
20080503.xls
etc..
if I select dates 20080501 and 20080508 I would like to create some code that will select all files inbetween and including the two dates.  Any ideas if this is possible and could you possible point me in the right direction if it is?!
Thanks,
Lee Stafford

Hi thanks,

Do you have some example code I can manipulate?  I am really struggling with writing the critera to selct files based on chosen dates.  I can import a file based on one date but thats as far as have got so far.

Thanks,

try this:
0) backup your db first
1) to reference FileSystemObject you need to make sure the "windows script host object model" has
been referenced in your access app. in a codea code module, go to menu tools> references and ehck
that dll.
2) copy these two functions
3) need to create an import log table
tblFilesToImport - with fields
      folder (text 255),
      filename (text 255),
      FlagImport (yes/no)

4) replace "tblStagingImport" in line
 DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet acImport, acSpreadsheetTypeExcel8, "tblStagingImport", r!folder +
r!FileName, True
with whatever table you want to import into

5) import the files by calling fnImportFile
eg
dim sFolder as string
dim sFileFrom As String, sFileTo As String
sFolder = "C:\temp\" 'whateverfolder
sFileFrom = "20080501.xls"
sFileTo = "20080510.xls"
call fnImportFile(sFolder, sFileFrom, sFileTo)

6) of course this is limited to your file names following some sort of alphaetical order

'******************************************************************************************
Function fnImportFile(sFolder as string, sFileFrom As String, sFileTo As String) As Boolean
    'import files that have been flagged in table tblFilesToImport to an import table tblStagingImport
    'replace accordingly
    Dim sTable As String, d As DAO.Database, r As DAO.Recordset
    Dim sql As String
    'call function to import list of files to log table
    Call fnFSOGetFileList(sFolder)

    sTable = "tblFilesToImport"
'-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    'if you wanted to manually check which files you wanted to import
    'sql = "select folder, filename, FlagImport from " & sTable & " where FlagImport = -1"
'-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    'criteria passed from input parameters
    sql = "select folder, filename, FlagImport from " & sTable & " where Filename between "
    sql = sql & "'" & sFileFrom & "' and '" & sFileTo & "'"
'-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Set d = CurrentDb
    Set r = d.OpenRecordset(sql)
    If r.RecordCount > 0 Then
        r.MoveFirst
        Do
            DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet acImport, acSpreadsheetTypeExcel8, "tblStagingImport",
r!folder + r!FileName, True
            r.MoveNext
        Loop Until r.EOF
    End If
    Set d = Nothing
End Function
'******************************************************************************************

'******************************************************************************************
Function fnFSOGetFileList(sFolder As String) As Boolean
    'where sFolder = "C:\myfolder\"  'whatever folder
    Dim fso As FileSystemObject
    Dim fld As folder
    Dim file As file
    'table to store filenames
    Dim sTable As String, d As DAO.Database, r As DAO.Recordset
    Dim sql As String
    Set fso = New FileSystemObject
    Set fld = fso.GetFolder(sFolder)
    '-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    'table that logs which files to import, create this table
    'it has fields folder (text 255), filename (text 255), FlagImport (yes/no)
    sTable = "tblFilesToImport"
    '-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    'clear table entries first
    sql = "delete * from " & sTable
    Set d = CurrentDb
    d.Execute sql
    Set r = d.OpenRecordset(sTable)

    For Each file In fld.Files
        'whatever, insert into access table etc
        r.AddNew
            r!folder = sFolder
            r!FileName = file.Name
        r.Update
    Next file
    Set d = Nothing
    Set fso = Nothing
End Function
'******************************************************************************************

create a variable to get the date from your calendar control and then convert to a string using cstr and other functions below.

Dim dt As Date, s As String
    dt = whateverCalendarControl.value
    s = CStr(Year(dt)) + Right("0" + CStr(Month(dt)), 2) + Right("0" + CStr(Day(dt)), 2)
    s = s + ".xls"
