Question

Object doesn't support this property...

Asked by: ronallard

have a form that selects a client name/code. When you dbl-click it opens another form filtered by this client code. On this new form is about seven fields one of which is a checkbox to indicate if data has been externally recorded.
PROBLEM IS:
On OpenForm I check to see if client code is null. If not, I lock the client code (so it cant be changed) but allow the other fields to be updated. There could be several change records in the table this form is bound to. Now when I move to the next record, OnCurrent, I look at the checkbox, if it is on I lock all fields (these records have been externally, mainframe, recorded), if not checked I unlock all fields so that they can be updated. In 'OnCurrent' function is where I get error "Object doesn't support this property or method." Anyone have any clue as to why???

Is it possible for you to lock some of the fields, or does any attempt to lock a field give your this error ?

Perhaps you could use me.allowedit = false/true instead? This shuts of the possiblitiy of editing for the form altogether.

When referencing the check box, in the condition are you setting the check box equal to a boolean(true/False) value or integer value(0,1,2)?

How are you unlocking? My guess is maybe you're looping through all the controls on the form, unlocking them all? Some controls don't have a Locked property, so if you try to set it true or false, it will give you an error. If this is the problem, a simple on error resume next before your loop would fix it.

When I first open the form I can lock the 'key' control using:
If isnull([GAA]) then
  [GAA].locked
EndIf
This is in form onopen.

then in  OnCurrent I have
If checkbox = true then
 [control-1].locked
 [control-2].locked
else
 [control-1].locked = False
  [control-2].locked = False
endif

Then when I single step through this code in 'OnCurrent' the first time it hits a locked statement (any one cause I tried commenting each out to see if any would work) I get the error.

Ron

I think the problem is in the way you are trying to set the value of the .locked property in the Form_Current procedure.

If you are setting this property, Access likes you to put
[xyz].locked = True
rather than just
[xyz].locked

Using [xyz].locked is OK if you are only reading the value of this property, so something like:

if [xyz].locked then
   blah blah
end if

is perfectly OK.

I must admit I am baffled as to why you don't get an error in your Form_Open procedure if you have a similar statement in there, though.

Bryn, Here is the actual code...
I tried adding the " = True" but no difference!
--------------------------------------------------------------
Private Sub Form_Current()
On Error GoTo Err_Form_Current

'If form indicates data has been recorded lock all fields to prevent changes.
If Me![ChangeConfirm] = True Then
       Me![UserID].Locked
        Me![CoverageType].Locked
        Me![EffectiveDate].Locked
        Me![Amount].Locked
        Me![Description].Locked
        Me![ChangeConfirm].Locked
Else

        Me![UserID].Locked = False
        Me![CoverageType].Locked = False
        Me![EffectiveDate].Locked = False
        Me![Amount].Locked = False
        Me![Description].Locked = False
        Me![ChangeConfirm].Locked = False
End If
Exit_Form_Current:
    Exit Sub

Err_Form_Current:
    MsgBox Err.Description
    Resume Exit_Form_Current

End Sub

1) You have to set the Locked property like bryndavies says Me![ChangeConfirm].Locked = True

2) I think that this is not possible if a control has the focus. So if you move from one record to the next. Figure out that this record is not to be changed and want to lock the fields, you will have to set focus on a control that is not to be closed (this could be a dummy control with no recordsource or a field that is not so important). Insert a me!ControlName.setfocus before starting to set the locked properties.

If this does not help, let ut know what line that gives you the error message.

by: contact1234Posted on 1999-02-19 at 13:02:31ID: 1979529

Trygve's solution is correct - you must set the focus to another "dummy" control in order to successfully lock your control.

ronallard: Please reject contact1234's answer and, if that "answer" is correct, award the points to Trygve. I just read another questions that contact1234 "answered" by essentially copying a comment from another Expert. This is terrible netiquette and should not be rewarded.

The thing I can't quite figure out is that, if ronallard has compiled the code and Access didn't like the simple .locked, it would have told him. And the message he's getting isn't that you can't lock a control while it has the focus (that's its own error message), but that the control doesn't support that property. What types of controls are you locking, ronallard? Have you verified in the property sheet that they do have a locked property?

by: ronallardPosted on 1999-02-20 at 20:04:11ID: 1979532

They are bound text boxes. And, yes, when I pull up the property sheet in design mode on the form they will allow me to lock them...

Trygve repost as answer so I can get you the points.

Thank you !

I think that this is not possible to lock a control if it has the focus. So if you move from one record to the next. Insert a me!ControlName.setfocus before starting to set the locked properties.

Have a nice day everyone !
