Question

Stored procedures that call VBA functions?

Asked by: mgrattan

I have several action queries in an Access 2000 database that I would like to convert to SQL Server stored procedures.  I have already moved all the tables to a SQL Server database and I haven't had any problems with action queries that don't call VBA functions.  However, I'm at a loss as to how I go about converting the action queries that do contain function calls.

Do I need to re-write the VBA functions themselves as stored procedures?  Or can they still be called from a SQL Server stored procedure?

Here's an example of a VBA function that I call from one of the action queries:

Function GetComponents(vItemCode As Variant) As String
Dim db As DAO.Database, rs As DAO.Recordset
Dim sCrit As String

On Error GoTo GetComponents_Err
Dim strErrMsg As String

Set db = CurrentDb()
Set rs = db.OpenRecordset("qselItemCondiments", dbOpenSnapshot)

sCrit = "[Item] Like " & Trim(vItemCode)
rs.FindFirst sCrit
Do Until rs.NoMatch
    GetComponents = GetComponents & rs!Component & ","
    rs.FindNext sCrit
Loop

If Right(GetComponents, 1) = "," Then
    GetComponents = Left(GetComponents, Len(GetComponents) - 1)
End If

rs.Close
Set db = Nothing
Set rs = Nothing

GetComponents_Exit:
    Exit Function

GetComponents_Err:
    Select Case Err
        Case Else
            strErrMsg = strErrMsg & "Error #: " & Format$(Err.Number) & vbCrLf
            strErrMsg = strErrMsg & "Error Description: " & Err.Description
            MsgBox strErrMsg, vbInformation, "GetComponents"
            Resume GetComponents_Exit
    End Select

End Function

Hi,

Unfortunaly, you must convert it to Transact-SQL.

Good Luck,

Know where I can find some examples that would do the same thing as my function?  Or do you have some sample T-SQL that I can reference?

Basically, this function loops through a recordset to find all components of a particular SKU and then separates those components with commas so they can be displayed in one field on a report.

Well, you can open SQL-Query Analyzer and press F1.

It's a good start!

Good luck,

Thanks for your suggestion Vitor; I'll check out the Query Analyzer help files.  However, I would like to leave the question open for a while longer to give other experts a chance to add more information.

Personally, I try to refrain from referring people to help files when I answer questions and I try to provide clear, concise examples with sample code when appropriate.  That is what I would hope other experts would do when answering questions that I post.  A reference to a help file might be appropriate for a 50 point (or lower) question; but I would expect more information when the question is worth 200 points.  Thank you.

Hi Mike,

Switching to Ms SQL ;-)
Guess you did conclude (like vitor and me) that you need a Stored Procedure to do so. I just guess it's best to ask advise in the MS SQL topic area.
I read many SP's processing tables, but writing is another story...

Just have this Q PAQ'd and "move" it.

Success !
