Sequential numbering?

I have created an Order Entry form to replace an antiquated form created years ago. The old form automatically created a Sales Order Number for a new order, but the Database is password protected so I cannot tell what procedure he used to create the new number. It seems this should be very simple to do, but I have not had any insights as to the easiest way to accomplish this. I am using Access 2000. I thought Autonumber would be the answer but it is already used for the OrderID field and Access does not permit more than 1 autonumbering field per table. There is probably a painfully easy solution to this problem but I am at a loss.
