Question

Crystal Report Active X

Asked by: PaulaWright

I  have an Access database (XP) from which I created several Crystal Reports (8.5) because Access would not handle all the fields required for the reports.

I tried using the Wizard only to find that it asked for a password.  My database has no passwords.  Also it looks as if the Wizard is used to create reports.  If this is the way to go then hopefully this will be a simple copy/paste procedure once I get into it because I've already created the reports.

What I really would like to do is view the reports from within Access using the Crystal Active-X.  I've been over the Accocx97.mdb example on how to set up a CR in Access, however in XP I don't see a place to put the file name of the report.  I'm thinking that I have an Active X Control problem.

This is what I did.  I registered the Active X by going to Tools/ActiveX Controls/Crystal Report Viewer Control and registering crviewer.dll.  Then I opened a form and chose Insert/ActiveX Control/ and chose Crystal Report Viewer Control.  From what I've read I expected to bring up the Other tab on the properties and enter a ReportFileName and then be able to change in programatically.  That option was not available.

Then I tried registering Crystal Report Viewer Control9 using the same method crviewer9.dll.  When I tried to insert the ActiveX Control I got the following message.  "The OLE Server isn't registered.  To register the OLE server, reinstall it."  I have no idea what this means.  I'm not even sure I want a CR9 viewer because I'm writing in CR8.5.

I'm hoping someone can help me real quick as I've already wasted too much time re-doing these reports in Crystal
after having found out that Access won't handle them.

THANK YOU

When in design mode, looking at the properties of the control, chose Other---custom.  you'll see them there.  Also, if you refer to the cotnrol in code, typically they will 'popup' as are typing.

I got a message that said "The operation on the Crystal Report Viewer Control object failed.  The OLE server may not be registered.  To register the OLE server reinstall it."

The only thing I was able to find in Help on OLE Server was: "(OLE server: An application or DLL that supplies a linked or embedded OLE object to another application. For example, if an OLE object in an Access database contains a Microsoft Excel worksheet, Excel is the OLE server.) "  So from this I'm guessing I need to reinstall Crystal Reports?????

Thanks for your response.

To register a component in the registry, run REGSVR32.EXE. You can use this utility from the command line or

·From within Windows Explorer, associate the OCX file extension with the REGSVR32.EXE program.

·Once associated, double-clicking on an OCX component will automatically run the REGSVR32.EXE program and register the component with the Windows registry. The system should respond with a registration successful message.

·To register multiple OCX files, select them in Windows Explorer and press the [ENTER] key.

Unsuccessful registration of a component is usually the result of missing support .DLL files or a corrupt registry. The required support files are MFC42.DLL (version 6.0 or later) and MSVCRT.DLL (must be present but not registered).

Now here is another area where I'm more than slightly confused.  I read somewhere that the Crystal viewer ocx was crviewer.ocx.  Then I read somewhere else that Crystal stopped support on this ocx about 4 years ago.  When I registered the Active X through Access the associated file was a dll - crviewer.dll and crviewer9.dll depending on the Active X.  So I'm trying to figure out am I supposed to be using an ocx or a dll???  I can see a Crystal Report viewer using the Active X which was registered through Access using the dll file.  Or are these 2 totally separate issues?

When I search for ocx files on my computer the ones I find related to Crystal or Seagate are comctl32.ocx and CSelExpt.ocx.

So which file is it I'm supposed to register through regsvr32.exe.  I have registered Active X controls in this manner before.  But with the confusion (in my mind) between the ocx and the dll AND registering through Access AND not finding the crviewer.ocx on my PC I just haven't been sure how to go about this.

I have successfully used a Crystal Reports Active X control (dll) in another program before.  I just haven't been able to find much information in setting it up in Access.

Thanks

I beleive you are correct, it is a dll and not a ocx (I do not have it here so I cannot confirm).

I found this too:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Page 1  Solution The problem may be an unregistered Crystal Reports file. Run the repair option from the CD. If that fails, please do the following:If you are running Windows 95 or 98:Push the Start Button.Choose run...Type/Paste this into the "open" box: regsvr32 c:\Windows\system\crpe32.dll If this still does not work:Type/Paste this into the "open" box: regsvr32 c:\Windows\system\craxdrt.dll  If this still does not work:Type/Paste this into the "open" box: regsvr32 c:\Windows\system\crviewer.dll If you are running Windows NT:Push the Start Button.Choose run...Type/Paste this into the "open" box: regsvr32 c:\Winnt\system32\crpe32.dll If this still does not work:Type/Paste this into the "open" box: regsvr32 c:\Winnt\system32\craxdrt.dll If this still does not work:Type/Paste this into the "open" box: regsvr32 c:\Winnt\system32\crviewer.dll One of the three files may not be located in the path above. Do a search of your hard drive for each of these files and then enter the path. For example, if crpe32.dll is not located in the file path c:\Windows\system\crpe32.dll, change it to the correct path. If you found the file crpe32.dll located in the "crystal" folder on your machine then you would type regsvr32 c:\Crystal\crpe32.dll
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Page 2
Other suggestions: 1. The file "ntwdblib.dll" you have may be an incorrect version. Version 2000.02.08 is correct. Acquire a newer version of this file from Seagate or  and rename the old one (ntwdblib_old.dll). Paste the new file into your system32 folder (or wherever it was located) and try running the bills. If that does not work, try registering the file by using the command "regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\ntwdblib.dll" from the "Run..." command. Then try running the bills. 2. The next suggestion is to check that you have all the dependency files: Crystal 7.0 (32-bit) | version 6.1.0.609 Dependencies Comctl32.dll Comdlg32.dll Crpe32.dll Implode.dll Mfc42.dll Msvcrt.dll Msvcrt20.dll Ole32.dll Oleaut32.dll Oledlg.dll Olepro32.dll Correct File Versions Name Version msvcp50.dll 5.00.7022 msvcp60.dll 6.00.8168.0 ntwdblib.dll 1998.11.13 crviewer.dll 7.0.100.52 craxdrt.dll 7,0,100,186 The only option we have is to uninstall all files. After you remove all, the program will do a new full installation (not an update). Choose "Remove all" when you put the CD in. Your database will remain on your system. Make sure that these files are removed with the uninstall program (manually rename and move to another folder if you have to!): ntwdblib.dll crviewer.dll craxdrt.dll msvcp50.dll msvcp60.dll ntwdblib.dll crviewer.dll craxdrt.dll --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

sure thing.  The web site for crystal covers issues fairly well too.

Have you considered using the crystl32.ocx?  It is a crystal report control instead of a crystal report viewer control.

I never had any luck with the viewer control.  When I switched to trying to use the crystl32.ocx, I could then get reports to run from access.

It allows you to print to screen, or straight to paper, and allows the passing of parameters.

Of course the OCX report control has since been dropped in favor of the Runtime Designer Components.  (One difference I know of is that the OCX can only handle single parameter values, whereas the RDC can accept ranges.)

I have never used the RDC, but if you are interested in the OCX, I might be able to help steer you in the right direction.

by: PaulaWrightPosted on 2003-09-04 at 04:33:59ID: 9286982

The ocx is fine with me.  I don't need parameter values for these reports so that's not a problem.  The problem was even though I have Crystal Reports 8.5, when I searched my hard drive for that ocx I couldn't find it and I don't know how to get it.  I think I actually searched the Internet for the crviewer.ocx and found next to nothing.  I will try for the crystl32.ocx and see if I have any luck unless you know where I can get it.

Right now I'm getting ready to reinstall or at least repair my Crystal Reports app to see if that offers any help.

Thanks

by: 1WilliamPosted on 2003-09-04 at 04:37:08ID: 9287006

Paula, there is a reason Segate stopped using the OCX and went with the dll

by: PaulaWrightPosted on 2003-09-04 at 05:29:46ID: 9287476

Thanks William.  Okay let me go over where I am right now in this process (this is much more time consuming than I had originally thought it would be!!).

I read through the stuff you directed me to.

1.  Re:  http://support.crystaldecisions.com/library/kbase/articles/c2007290.asp.  I have all the dlls specified in this article.  BTW this article refers to the RDC - is that what I want?  All I really need to be able to do is view the reports and save them as a pdf.

2.  I read through the Help in Crystal Reports.  This is where I get confused as to what I need.  In the "Method Used to Access the Crystal Report Engine" the Crystal ActiveX Control uses crystl32.ocx (apparently not included in the CR 8.5 install).  The RDC uses craxdrt.dll.  Honestly I don't care what I use, I just want the easiest means to view and export the reports.  From there I find the files that I need.

3.  I reinstalled Crystal Reports.

4.  From your Page 1 Solution:  I tried to register the crpe32.dll.  I got this message:  "c:\winnt\system32\crpe32.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.  DllRegisterServer may not be export, or a corrupt version of c:\winnt\system32\crpe32.dll may be in memory.  Consider using PView to detect and remove it."  I did find PView (never heard of it before) and opened it but I'm not sure what to do with it.  I did scan through the processes listed.  I didn't see the dll.

5.  Page 2 Suggestion:  I found the twsdblib.dll and I do have an older version (1995.6.7.0).  I am now searching the Internet to see how I can get a newer version.

6.  Since reloading Crystal Reports, I did go back into Access to see what I could do.  I can now run the Crystal Report Wizard to create the reports (which I've already created!!!) and perhaps they can be copied and pasted.  I'm guessing I would have the option to export those reports so that they could be saved.  Still no success with the Active X.

by: 1WilliamPosted on 2003-09-04 at 05:35:47ID: 9287512

sounds like you ar almost there.  As my research (and feeble memory) have pointed out, Crystal no longer supports the Active X OCX, but instead the dll.  Once properly registered, the dll should show as an availabe control.

The issue you are facing where Crystal works with the wizard and not so easily with your old reports is a issue I have faced many, many times in the past.  Crystal does not take well to changes in its' environment.  A real pain.
I think the direction you are heading with #6 is the correct path.

by: PaulaWrightPosted on 2003-09-04 at 05:43:09ID: 9287570

I'm thinking that might be the way to go as well, since I'm having so many problems with the Active X control.  HOPEFULLY, cutting and pasting my existing reports won't be too much of a problem.

I looked at the articles you sent.  The Crystal/Access didn't really have any help for an Active X Control, just creating Crystal Reports using an Access database.  I've already done that.  The second refers to problems with a Microsoft Windows NT 4 (Service Pack 4) or Windows 98 environment and I'm using Windows 2000.

I'll try working with this later today (have to work on something else right now unfortunately) and get back to this list and post the solution that worked for me.

Thanks for your time and help.  If you run into anything else, let me know.

by: MourdekaiPosted on 2003-09-04 at 05:56:04ID: 9287647

If you still might want to try the OCX-

Go to:
http://www.it-mate.co.uk/main_content/default.asp

Click on Free software on the left, then click on ocx files.  Be sure to get the crystl32.ocx version 6.1.0.609

It works a lot better than the viewer control (IMHO).  I'm not sure about exporting to .pdf though.

by: PaulaWrightPosted on 2003-09-04 at 10:44:49ID: 9290148

I'm about to pull my hair OUT!!  The Crystal Report Wizard will create/open a report in a viewer but it doesn't put the viewer out there for one to use.
You have 4 options for viewing.  Preview (opens in the ActiveX viewer), Edit with Report Designer, Analyze with Seagate Analysis, and View Later.  There
MUST be someone somewhere that has done this before, but I've tried every forum I can find and I'm just not getting anywhere.

So here is where I'm at now.  I believe I have a viewer on the report, but I don't know how to tell it which report to bring up.  I want to put a command
button out for each report.  I'm still getting the error message when choosing Other/Custom on the properties.  I did register the crviewer.dll through
regsvr32 and then through Access to be sure about that.

The syntax in another application where I use a Crystal Reports ActiveX is as follows:
\*******************
set_ref #CRY05 to(*CREATE_AS #CRYSTAL.application)
set_ref #BnsRpt to(*CREATE_AS #CRYSTAL.Report)

EVTROUTINE HANDLING(#INDRPTS.Click)

invoke #CRY05.openreport pFilename('\\server\Individual Reports.rpt') OpenReport_RETVAL(#BnsRpt)
set #CRSTLVWR reportsource(#BnsRpt)
invoke #CRSTLVWR.viewreport

ENDROUTINE
********************\

In trying to follow the same logic I have:

\****************************
Dim crv As CRViewer
Dim crR as Object                 ????????????????

Set crv = Me.CRViewer2.Object
Set crR = ???????????

CRViewer2.Name = "c:\page1.rpt"
****************************\
I get an error: "You can't assign a value to this object" on the above line.

On the Dim crR statement the options are:

CRCrystalReportViewerViewInfo
CRDrillTYpe
CRField
CRFields
CRLoadingType
CRObjectType
CRTrackCursor
CRVEventInfo
CRViewer
CRTrackCursorInfo
CRVIEWERLib
CRCrystalReportParametersDlgLib

None of these are blatantly obvious as referring to a report.

by: MourdekaiPosted on 2003-09-04 at 10:50:14ID: 9290192

What do you want to do with the report when the button is clicked?

Do you want to open it embedded to a form?  Do you want to be able to print it?

by: PaulaWrightPosted on 2003-09-04 at 10:55:49ID: 9290222

This is how it works in my other application.  I choose the report by clicking on the button and you can see the report on the form
(within the ActiveX control).  So yes, I guess that it's embedded in a form, but you also choose the report by clicking a button on
the same form.  Once the report is open, I believe I should be able to see an export control as I would in Crystal so that the
report can be exported to a pdf file.

Maybe I need to think outside the box, but this is what I had envisioned.

by: PaulaWrightPosted on 2003-09-04 at 10:56:16ID: 9290224

Oh, and yes, I also need the ability to print.

by: MourdekaiPosted on 2003-09-04 at 11:16:01ID: 9290356

If you use the crystl32.ocx you can open the report in another window.  That window has some of the same buttons that crystal has, meaning you can export to any of the typical formats (including pdf) and also print from that screen.

by: PaulaWrightPosted on 2003-09-04 at 11:22:56ID: 9290424

Okay, so HOW do I open the report in another window?  What is the syntax?

by: MourdekaiPosted on 2003-09-04 at 11:31:14ID: 9290488

First download the file from the link above, and register the ocx.  (This is for crystl32.ocx)

Then on your form, use the toolbox and go to more controls.

select "Crystal Report Control" and place it on your form.  Once placed, you won't be able to see it in normal view.  It shows up in design view only.

Then in design view, double click the control and you will get a properties dialog box popup with a ton of stuff to select or deselect.

If you want to assign the report name from code use this:

name of control:  CrystalReport1

CrystalReport1.ReportFileName = 'full path and filename here

then to actually run the report use this code

CrystalReport1.Action = 1

If you need help with any of the other properties let me know.

I would suggest under the General tab choose destination "To Window", also you can put the file name there.

Under preview you can select what buttons will appear, including the preview window size, here you can make sure the export button is in the preview window.

by: PaulaWrightPosted on 2003-09-04 at 12:53:25ID: 9291154

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  It is working now.  The ocx may not be the best way to go (per William) but it is working for me.  And since all I want to do is
view, print, and export, hopefully it won't be a problem.

I finally realized that I was choosing the viewer control instead of the report control (and this may not have been a choice until I downloaded and
registered the ocx since I don't remember seeing it in the list).

Thanks both to you and William for helping me with this problem.

by: 1WilliamPosted on 2003-09-04 at 12:56:42ID: 9291188

... and no points for me... Oh well, the important thing is you got it working as your wanted.  :)

by: MourdekaiPosted on 2003-09-04 at 13:46:03ID: 9291502

Glad you got it working.  I've been trying off and on to get this to work for a couple months.  Couple days ago I figured it out, then you asked the question...and BAM!!! I'm an expert! :)

by: PaulaWrightPosted on 2003-09-05 at 04:40:36ID: 9295051

William, I really wanted to give you points, but as I read the instructions my understanding is that you are supposed to give points
to the one who actually solves the problem for you.  You gave me so much information and it was good information but it didn't
actually get me to where I could see the report.  I just really discovered this forum this week so I may have done this
incorrectly.  If I did, I apologize.  You do have my gratitude (for what that's worth!!!) because you did try so hard and I hope that
you won't hesitate to help me again if I have problems.  Actually, I'm not even sure what the points are for since I've been
spending more time trying to resolve the issue than figuring out what this forum is about in that respect.

By the way, and maybe I should open a new question.  Do either of you know where I can find the rest of the Action values;
e.g. ReportName.Action = 1?

Whena question is accepted, often times there are more than one 'Collaborator'  Usually, one 'Collaborator' acutally resolves the problem with the assitance of others.  In other occassions, instead of a collaborator actually assiting in resolving the question, they offer advice.  By splitting the question to those you feel worthy of recognition, enables all those you feel made a valued contribution to receive credit for their efforts.  Each person how answers a question and gets credit of a contribution is tracked.  Take a read of the link to Question and Answer tips)

A second question should always be opened as a new question.  By each question being seperate, a user can search and find the answer they need, vs having to seach through a long thread.

So is there a way to change the points after you've already given them?

If you feel so inclined, you can post a zero point question in community support.  Explain what you want and include the url to this question.  Also, at this juncture, it is important to also get feedback from Mourdekai.

Mourdekai?  Any feedback?  I want to do whatever is right.

I did open a new question with the 2nd question.

Paula,

Here is what the site's tips say:
"If a member gets helpful solutions from several Experts, the process of posting comments allows that member to pull pieces from several comments to solve the issue at hand, and keep the question open for more proposed solutions. In this case, they may reward Expert points to multiple Experts by splitting the points."

If you feel more than one expert helps you solve the issue, then it is appropriate to split the points.

However, if an expert gives useful information that doesn't directly solve your problem, I can offer general advice on how I would handle it.

Increase points of Q and give extra to that expert.

Post a points only Q for an expert citing the Q URL in the question, saying it was for their extra help on the question.

Paula wrote "You [1William] gave me so much information and it was good information but it didn't
actually get me to where I could see the report."

If you feel the information from 1William was useful to you (note the difference between useful, and good information), then I would suggest to post another Q called "pts for 1William" and give him some points for the help he gave in this question.

FYI.  Before I do anything I'm going to read up on these points and see what they're all about.  I came across a post where
someone said something to the effect of "if I had any more points to offer on this question I would".  So I don't know what that's
all about.  But I will do something William.  I did get useful information in your responses.

I should have read everything before I started but I was kind of desperate to get an answer.  It seems as though you don't
even have to pay to ask a question or search this list, but I got the impression that you did, so I paid.  Anyway...  I'll get to it
as soon as I can.
