I am using TransferText to MailMerge with Word. Can this also transfer Picture Files?

Hi,

One of the fields in the table I am exporting is an OLE field with a picture in it.  I would like to be able to have this Mail Merge with my Word Document as well, but it doesn't seem to work.  If I drop the Picture Field onto my Word Document and then merge, nuthin appears.

Is there a way to do this?

Don't store the images in the database - store a link to the file instead, and you should then be able to use a technique like this to do it:
http://www.gmayor.com/mail_merge_graphics.htm
OR
if you can upload your images to your server, then you can link them like this:

Shane,

the problem with the IncludePicture as mentioned in your link is, once it has loaded a pciture the first time, it doesn't change the next time you transfer a record to the document.  You still get the same picture as before even though the link merge field data has totally changed.

I dont get this and from what Ive read over on the Word Post, IncludePicture is one of those things that just doesn't work as advertisied.

Any ideas?

jaffer,

lol, i can only handle so many crazy workarounds in one day - lol, can't M$ write a program so that it actually works without all thes wacky fixes and workarounds?

geesh.

:)

I don't see this as an option, but as the only solution (as far as I can see)  :o(
unless you want to go pdf or snapshot for your Reports.

You know, considering that Access and Word are supposed to be part of an 'Office' Suite - that is, they actually work together at some level, I just don't see it.  Seems like its' stuck together with spit and chewing gum to me.

Really , the only solution that can work witjout going to hyperlinks is the IncludePicture syntax in Word, but guess what, that doesn't work.  Well actually, it does work, once, and after that never again.  Man some of this stuff really is pathetic.

M
It worked for me, although I had to press CTRL+A followed by F9 after the merge was complete (as noted in the article).
shane, on mine it is hardcoding in the path on the first try and then when i try to merge another record, it doesnt see the merge.  is it not doing that for you?

try merging a record.  closing the documnet, merging another record and opening the doc and see what happens.  Does the new picture show up or the same old one?

try hitting Alt F9, is your has your {MergeField} been replaced?  Thats what is happening to me :(

M
I'm merging to a new document, not merging to the existing document. Each merge doc (one page long in my case) does have a different picture on it - I'm not merging them one at a time.
Shane,

I have a Document called an ExecutiveSummary.  It basically summarizes the Background, Resume, etc of my Candidates.  I usually create these via TransferText one at a time.  I Transfer, open it, merge it, save it, close it.

But the next time I try to merge, the picture remains from the previous candidate as my merge field has been wiped out and replaced with the actual path.  this seems to happen only with the IncludePicture Field as all other merge fields remain.

I am guessing the only way to make it work is to make word .replace their hardcoded version with my mergefield version every time it opens.  Will read up to figure out how to do that ...

M

>P.S., On yours, try exporting a new query with different pictures, open it again and see if the pictures change.

i have one document called executive Summary that has all of my formatting and merge fields on it.  When I do the merge, I open this document and then push the merge button and it create a merged 'letter' document.  the problem is, after the first merge, what was my MergeField in the IncludePicture on my documnet has been replaced by the path of the original picture I put in there.

That doesn't happen to you?

M
No (although I'm using Office 2002) - I push the "Merge to new document" button on the merge toolbar and it generates another document with all my images - the original is left intact.
found out i had a problem with my template - works fine now, thanks :)

M
You see - you can't blame MS for everything :)
yes, but its more fun than accepting the fact that I'm actually an idiot :)

PS, that darn Registry setting for JPEG Dialog Warnings still isnt working.  Any new ideas on that?

M
I would use BMP, but they don't work well if i am stretching the image at all.

M
You know, there are some funny questions on here.  The other day  I saw one where the guy said, "Yes, I own this business and I need a database written that can do these 50 things - 500 point question".  Sorry, I had to laugh.

M
look as if Tiff's are about same size as BMP yet stretch better.  I guess I'll have to go with those...
