The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Hide unbound textboxes when no data is present.

Tags: hide, text, box, textbox, unbound
I have 3 unbound text boxes.  Only one of them will have data for a given record.  I would like to stack them on top of each other on the form so that the data they show is in the same place.  How would I make the unbound text box visible Only if there is data?

That way if there is data in textbox1 and none in textbox2 & 3 only textbox1 would be visible and the other two would be hidden and not block the data since they are stacked.

Thanks!

I would use the Form_CUrrent event as your data will/may be different for each record ...

Private Sub Form_Current()
    Me.txtBox1.Visible = Not (Len(Me.txtBox2.Value & vbNullString) + Len(Me.txtBox3.Value & vbNullString))
End Sub

in the form's "OnCurrent" event, put

If IsNull(me.TextBox1) then
   me.TextBox1.visible = false
else
   me.TextBox1.visible = true
end if

Do the same thing for the other two text boxes in the same "OnCurrent" event procedure.

p.s.  This is probably no the most efficient way to do this.  I'm not sure how you are getting your records, but you could probably achieve what you want with just one text box (since only one will have data at any given time).

I'd hide it slightly differently - but still oncurrent event

Dim ctl As Control
For Each ctl In Me.Controls
If TypeOf ctl Is TextBox Then
If IsNull(ctl) Then
ctl.Visible = False
Else
ctl.Visible = True
End If
End If
Next ctl

> unbound text boxes

I assume that you are manually populating them? Why unbound?

If they are unbound, why do you need three textboxes?  why can't you use just one?  then you could have a separate variable that would be used to identify what data was being shown in that textbox, if you need that for other processing.  SOunds to me as though you are making this form much more complicated than it needs to be.

That was my thought as well.

04.19.2005 at 08:17AM PDT, ID: 13816244
I need to use three multiple text boxes because I can not figure out how to change their color depending on the data in them.  I can do it in one text box with:

=Switch([level]=1,String(5," ") & [name] & " " & [occupation],[level]=2,String(10," ") & [name] & " " & [occupation],[level]=3,String(15," ") & [name] & " " & [occupation])

which was given in another quetion I asked, but I need the field to be Red if Level=1, Green if Level=2, etc.  I could not figure out how to do this with one textbox, so I made individual text boxes and set their font colors

=Switch([level]=1,String(5," ") & [name] & " " & [occupation])   Red
=Switch([level]=2,String(10," ") & [name] & " " & [occupation])   Green
=Switch([level]=3,String(15," ") & [name] & " " & [occupation])   Blue

Then I wanted to stack them since the colors are hard coded.  I tried to use
if level = 1 then
me.textbox.forecolor = vbRed
end if

for the big text box, but that changed ALL of the text boxes to red if any had level =1.  I am probably making this more confusing, but since I am new to all of this I tend to do things in a round about way until I figure a better way.

You could use Conditional Formatting to change the textbox colour. Create a textbox that holds the Level field, and you can then use the Expression operator to change the colour of the textbox as required.

04.19.2005 at 08:26AM PDT, ID: 13816332
I am not sure how I could use the conditional format since the textbox does not contain the level.  Level is a separate field in the record, so how do I set conditional formatting to say that if level=1 then make it red.  I have used conditional format, but I thought it only looked at the data in that field.  Is there more to it than that?

04.19.2005 at 08:28AM PDT, ID: 13816361

Rank: Genius

Yes, there is more. If the level is in a textbox called "txtlevel", you can use the Expression option in Conditional Formatting.

Your expression would look something like:
[Form]![txtLevel]=1
Use this to set the textbox to red, for example. The conditional format would be applied to your unbound textbox.

what about select case

dim thingy
thingy = me.fieldname

select case thingy

case "thingy1"
ME.fieldname.fontcolour = "255"

case"thingy2"
me.fieldname.fontcolour = "0"

end select

that should help you

sorry put that code in the oncurrent section as well
