how would i do this with SQL

I've got a table - with a field called tFilePath in it - adn that file path field holds a fully qualified path to a file eg. "c:\testfolder\subfolder\file.txt" or "c:\documents and settings\file.txt"

Now - what i want to do - is for a given directory - eg c:\testfolder - i want to query the database adn get the unique folders and files that are in that folder - eg.

SELECT DISTINCT (????) WHERE tFilePath LIKE 'c:\testfolder\%'

Now - there are often 20,000 and 30,000 records in teh table - so writing a smart query is very very important - pulling the data out to the middle layer is very very slow.

Its easy to filter so that i get every file and folder thats under the folder in question - i can do that using LIKE as in the example above.

How how would it do it so i restrict the results to just those files taht are in the folder in question?

How would i do it so i restrict the results to just the distinct names of folders in that folder - eg. i want it to come back with
c:\testfolder\subfolder1\
c:\testfolder\subfolder2\
c:\testfolder\subfolder3\

Or - it could return the full file name - i don't mind - i just need a way of filtering it so i just get the unique folder names.

Previously - i got it to give me the distinct drivenames by doign:

SELECT DISTINCT (Left(tFilePath,3)) FROM filedetails

And that returned something like c:\ d:\ e:\

but thats using a VBA function... which i'm told is slower
