The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Customary and proper hourly rates for basic aceess db services

Asked by zombiwulf in Microsoft Access Database

Tags: hourly, rate, access

I have been working on a basic inventory implementation and I am wondering what rate would have been reasonable to charge were I competent and efficient. I am neither - but this was understood by both parties to be a learning experiment.

Scope is to create a database to track inventory for a company that purchases a raw ingredient from multiple suppliers, processes it, and then uses some of the processed product inhouse, and sells the rest as a wholesale supplier. They've been doing fine with an Excel spreadsheet, but want to formalize their inventory process to satisfy the bankers and accountants. We decided to go with Access with an eye toward later interfacing with their retail side as well.

Implementation has been to take the stock downloadable inventory template and modify it to fit.

I've been able to reuse most of the structure, with the addition of a few forms, modified others, and created new reports.

Number of unique products is very low. Currently under 50 and only a couple added per month, with those replacing existing products, so no heroic efforts at optimizing are required. (Not trying to be sloppy - just not worth investing a lot of effort to make the database open in 3 seconds instead of 4.

Last phase will be producing pivot tables/charts so management can view consumption/profitability trends.
This will involve some fairly simple queries - but little or no macros at this point.

What I am looking for here is to give my client/friend a reasonable evaluation of what the cost/benefit would have been had they hired a real dba who would have been able to produce the same product in a much shorter time frame at a much higher hourly rate.

I know this is all a bit vague and subjective - just trying to get a feel for real world rates. Web searching has yielded rates from $15 to $300 per hour and clearly neither extreme is appropriate.
