simple sql query for records -- not fields

Is is possible to create a SQL UNION query that selects records (not fields) from from two separate tables and alternates records into a third table?

I understand how to get them to join in a single record, based on one field, as in:

SELECT *
FROM FIRSTTABLE AS T1
INNER JOIN SECONDTABLE AS T2
ON T1.FIELD1=T2.FIELD1;

But I don't want one contiguous record, which is what this code gives me of course. I want:

FIRSTTABLE record 1
SECONDTABLE record 1
FIRSTTABLE record 2
SECONDTABLE record 2
FIRSTTABLE record 3
SECONDTABLE record 3

Am I attempting to do something with sql that would be better attemted with a different tool?
