Create a query in Access and use the Word Tools to set it up. Select QUERY when you get to the datasource part.
Access does not have to be open at the time. Word will 'reach in' and use the query.... but, the query will return default values. If Access is open and your query is dynamically filtered, Word will use the 'live' filtered query.

If your table is already set up in Access, very easy. Just go to Word and follow the wizard, which is
